Oh Butterfly!

i hope you don't mind you gave me a real chuckle here, even though i realize it was a rant.

I have 2 very deep med drawers... was one... between changing meds and stopping meds that i might need again, and backup meds, and ... i'm the same boat as you, i won't throw something out unless it's bad, but i do end up with things way over the hill in there, and have to clean stuff out periodically. only thing is i do know my active ingredients, so no googling here, just lots and lots of digging in way too many pharmacy bags.

at least you are resourceful... finally did think of the red sharpie hehe. i have about 3 sleep meds none of which i use any more... you have me thinking these are probably expired by now and i need to find them and chuck them. one is flunitrazepam a longacting benzo which makes me drunk for like 2 days when i take it so even if it isn't i should chuck that.

but see, here, we are not allowed to throw meds in the trash. we have to throw them in a special trash at the pharmacy. and i never associate buying meds with trashing meds, so i always forget when i go there.

sorry for the ramble...

nite nite.... 4.15 here and still awake oh me oh my. i was dozing off in front of the puter, no sooner i shut it off than i perked up again....

Mari is right in that mostly the problem is loss of effectiveness after "expiration." However, some medications and supplements can become toxic due to chemical or physical changes.

Also, the "official" expiration date applies only to meds stored correctly. Improper storage conditions such as exposure to humidity, temperature and light will cause more rapid degradation. Different conditions affect different meds, depending on the its kind of substance, its form, and its packaging. Please take into account the cabinet where the Ambien was hiding, and how hot/humid it might have got in there, say during the peak of summer.

Please talk to a trusted pharmacist about the expiration as well as storage conditions before continuing to use the old Ambien. If she deems it unsafe, you might try to beg for say a week or 10 day's worth ... until your appointment on Jan 8th. As you said, if you'd got your refills, you would have a "good" batch right now.

~ waves ~
p.s. the fact that the stuff worked and you feel ok probably means it is ok. But i can't recommend keeping on taking it. Ambien doesn't build up. But if it can turn toxic, we don't know if it may contain chemicals that do. I am glad you did get that sleep.
Hi waves - I just turned my laptop back on because I realized that I forgot to hit reply to this post and thank you. You said everything the pharmacist said! Sorry you are still awake. It's only 9:33 pm here. Thanks again.

Butterfly,

You would be a good patient liaison. I love that the pharmacist was helpful about the Ambien.

If it helps you, then as soon as you get back from the pharmacy, write the names on them.
Make up your own color system. For example, all meds that come into the house starting this week are marked with a certain color crayon or a sticker. Twelve months from now, you start using a different color crayon.

Or get a box or a bag. I like clear plastic bags so I can see them.
Right now I have a clear plastic zip cosmetic traveling bag that I bought at CVS or Walgreens maybe. You can keep some crayons of this year's color in the bag with the meds.
I cannot find a picture of it. Here is one that is cuter than mine. http://www.bonanza.com/listings/CLEA...FbKiPAodxlsAHA
I somewhat keep track of which are my new meds I picked up yesterday and which are the meds I picked up last month but have not used yet. ( I try to stay one month ahead.)

Is there a reason you are keeping your meds deep in the pantry? Is it so that no one bothers with them?

Hi, Butterfly,

Thanks for sharing the info you learned.
I have one med in powdered form. I will throw that a way if I have old stuff --- need to re-re-organize anyway.

Mari, that's such a good idea. I could get some of those round stickers like for yard sale price tags, and each one as I get it put it on the top of the cap. Let's say all of 2013 could be pink caps. Well right there that would tell me this is current. And write what it is right then so I know what I have.

Mari - you're one month ahead, I'm always late getting stuff refilled. Maybe that could be one of my resolutions. Doing stuff like this, getting my meds organized.

I keep them in the highest kitchen cabinet I have because my 6 year old digs around and even gets on her stool sometimes. She's not being naughty, I think she just wants to know what's in all these cabinets that she doesn't use when she helps unload the dishwasher. They have child resistant caps but I want them as out of reach as possible.

I don't keep any medicines in my bathroom because I have an older home and my bathroom doesn't have an exhaust vent fan. My bathroom is just a regular room like the rest of the house, so humidity stays high in there.

Butterfly

Please check with your pharmacist about how to dispose of your expired
drugs.

I know that in my area, they have days that you can bring in bottles
of expired bottles of pills.

Or they tell you also how to dispose of them.

I personally can't remember right now. How they tell you too.

We don't usually have this problem. Because Derrick usually takes
a complete dosage.
