For those that don't care for the dopey "metro" look, you can switch to a more classic interface:

On the front page of windows 8, if you scroll to the right there is Microsoft office. Open that and you create a new document. Hope this is what you need to know. I am learning just like you are. Keep plugging away! ginnie
