Red face OT: Skin care products...help!

Oh my face is amess.
I have the worst complexion...have had oily skin and sensitive my whole life and acne scars to prove it....plus I can't seem to leave them alone still at the age of 45.....hangs head....
I was using acne free products for a long time but still getting an occasional welt that really hurts. and decided that the cleaner did not really take off my make up very well...so have been trying different things and now my face is jsut a mess. I went from using benzol products to using salycitic products...my make up is really hard to remove.
any one here use cold cream to take off make up?
anyone here with oily skin and issues like mine?

Hi Bizi,
I don't wear make up because 9 months of the year it melts during the time I go from the front door to the hot car.
My skin used to be oily. Now it is dry and I am feeling old and dried up somedays. When I wore makeup I sometimes used vit E oil or mineral oil to take it off if I was wearing the tough waterproof kind.

Have you been to a dermatologist? Those folks have suggestions on make up.

M

Here's what the Mayo clinic says about acne treatments:

a dermatologist does sound like a good idea. At http://www.vitacost.com I buy tea tree pads and often times clean my face with them.
The great thing about oily skin is that it keeps your face looking younger as you get older. Most people, even with my gray hair, think I am younger than I am. I don't have many wrinkles and haven't used any creams. My friend with dry skin has been using oil of Olay...her skin looks now younger.

THank you.
There does not sound like any quick fix...the products usually take 6-8 weeks to show effectiveness. UGH!
The tea tree pads sound perfect and are reasonably priced too!.

grease monkey here.

yup. mega oily skin.

here are some tips from my dermatologist.

exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. oily skin mean sticky dead skin cells. they don't flake off...they plug the pores.

salycylic acid products to wash face and body like neutrogena acne wash.

make sure you wash your body and face AFTER you wash and condition your hair. conditioner will stick to fine hairs on your body...thus adding more oil...and clogs the pours.

spot treat pimples and the oiliest areas with benzoyl peroxide forumulas. don't start with mega dose of 10%. that is best to just put on a pimple. at our age, we dont want to dry out...just de-grease.

moisturize. yep. you need to add moisture. i use oil of olay definity. i love it. has sunscreen and is really working to fade the brown spots..i have melasma...plus some zit scars are GONE. it's a foam. light weight and goes well under makeup.

makeup can be tricky. you want a good coverage, but not heavy and greasy. the stay put all day types work well, but you really have to wash and wash to get them out of your pours. but..using a sunscreen/waterbased moisturizer ( acne free makes a good one too) under your makeup keeps the makeup from getting into the pores.

i like the powder mineral based makeup. loreal has good prices. and girlfriend...we are in the south. i don't go to my garage without my makeup.

blot blot blot. cheap-o tissue paper works. so does the cheap-o napkins. they soak up the oil, but don't remove your makeup.

now for the picking part. even my dr says that releasing the presure and getting the infection out can help. BUT, it has to be done right. boy howdy do i know how one can hurt. but if it hasn't come to a head...it's not ready.

clean you hands and scrub under your fingernails. use a hand sanitizer. even put some of that on the pimple or blackhead before you mess with it. do not go from one zit to another without using the sanitizer again.

don't mash. a sterile needle to gently prick the pimple...and press down on the sides. a dab of rubbing alcohol to clean it up. if you really make a mess of a big one...use a teeny dab of liquid bandage. it will dry clear and makeup will cover it and not get into it. seals it.

here ya go....some of the info from my dr. i haven't been in a few years. it has really helped. i never had a zit until i got a bad case of stress induced adult acne.

great topic. i'm glad you brought it up.

i'll add later what supplements i take to help my skin.

Lightbulb nutritional

1) zinc
2) essential fatty acids -- flaxoil is best
3) Niacin and folic acid help (there is an RX vitamin called Nicomide for this).
4) Vit A
5) Vit E
bad fats typically make acne worse...due to increased inflammation

good fats, help the skin repair and restore itself.

What comes from within, typically works best, compared to putting stuff on
top of damaged skin. The living part of the skin is deep down out of reach of most ointments. Overdoing skin treatments can defat the skin and in the end make it harder to repair it, so don't overdo.

THank you thank you thank you curious.
You're the best!
THis is exactly what I needed to hear.
sorry that you have to deal with this as well but appreciate your sharing.
I really need to moisturise????
I have been using loreal true match make up with sun screen.
I never knew about conditioner doing that.
What do you use to exfoliate?
It is worst at my temples for some reason so have been using more make up there which of course adds to the problem.
thank you again for the info.
bizi

I jsut read your post mrs. D.
thank you
I use to take a lot of fish oils and that me so greasy that I only take 1 at night now. already take folic acid and a good multi vitamin.
I take a total of 9 pills at night including all of my supplements. Just don't think I can choke down anymore. Alot of times I get lazy and don't take them because the calcium citrate pills are so big....
but that is another issue...

I use OptiZinc... it is really nice. No upset at all. (not like the sulfate form).

It is not expensive, and they even sell it at Whole Foods.
Made by Source Naturals.

Very reasonable $$ for what you get back! All the acne/dandruff products have zinc in them. If you use it orally it is better and also prevents colds and infections.

Zinc is the primary treatment for healing bedsores and wounds too.

Lightbulb Flax oil

is better for acne than fish oil, IMO.
