Has anyone checked your adrenal hormone levels? Both intractable pain and opioids can suppress them right out of whack, which can add to a lot of problems, including the meds not working as well as they could/should.

You can read up on it here:

Here's an example/explanation of what I meant above:

Quote:
Serum pregnenolone may drop to subnormal levels when patients are maintained on opioids. In these cases, patients complain that their medication is “no longer working.” Opioids may suppress pregnenolone production and require replacement as is the case with testosterone.

Welcome to NeuroTalk:

I really don't think it is safe to take 5 or 6 Lunesta a night.

Taking opiates long term has been shown to increase the number of pain receptors in the brain. This is sensed by glia
which are the brain's support cells.
Here is a typical paper explaining this tolerance and it uses morphine as an example:
http://www.anzca.edu.au/fpm/events/f...tolerance.html

So I am sorry that there are no easy answers for you.

One avenue to explore is Vit D testing. There are new papers showing chronic pain patients are typically low in Vit D...and by raising the levels in the body some pain relief may be possible and even lowering of pain medication dosing.

http://pain-topics.org/clinical_concepts/vitamind.php

Your doctor can order the testing for you, so you can determine how much to use.
For more information see my Vit D thread here:

Default pain not relieved

I'm awake at 2am again! with high pain levels and joined here for support. After 5 yrs of a medical merry go round a peripheral nerve stimulator implant and every treatment available I'm going stir crazy. Been on opiates for 4 yrs and hate them and pain still is going up- last month had a full medical check at Vit D is dangerously low! Then I read this link, of how I wish I knew the answers
