I'm not qualified to answer that.......but as my hubby would say, that won't stop me from having an opinion !
![]() Carpel tunnel is dx'd when the nerve is compressed going through your wrist. I can't see how that damage could be done from whiplash. Was there an accident and your wrist was jammed too ? I would think it was more likely that the damage to your neck causing the whiplash also caused a slipped/ruptured disc or a shift in the cervical vertabrae that is pressing on the nerve root leaving your spine that "looks like" carpel tunnel on an emg. I have had an emg which shows carpel tunnel in my left wrist. I'm a righty. I only type by the hunt and peck method. My wrist doesn't hurt. I don't see how I could possibly have CP. I do have TOS, cervical arthritis, and bulging discs. My new neurologist thinks my "wiring is weird" and because the main nerve is impinged at my neck, the neurons are just firing funky. CP should cause weakness in the hand in a medial distribution (it's the medial nerve that is impinged going through the wrist) I have numbess/weakness in an ulnar distribution (last 3 fingers). I guess the nerve impulses can get crossed on the way up to the brain. What does your neurologist say ? |

Oops !
I should also add, check out the repetitive strain injury/thoracic outlet syndrome thread. Carpel Tunnel is one of those RSI's too. Good luck ! |

I've heard that Carpal Tunnel can possibly be caused by referred nerve problems from the neck. I have it as well. I think I understood it right, as sometimes there will be deferred nerve pain to the farthest extremety. It will probably depend on what your EMG studies say. It has to do with the Medial nerve. This might give you a place to start. Please forgive my spelling. Hope this helps, Dee

as Finz's hubby said about her, it wont keep me from offering my opinion as well. I was originally dx'ed by a (quoting my neurologist) "quacker jack eating orthopedist" as having carpal tunnel syndrom when I first started complaining about numbness and tingling in my hands, arms, shoulders, back and neck. This guy was ready and willing to have me undergo surgery on BOTH wrists.
Thank goodness we went to the neuro before agreeing to surgery. As hubby and I had suspected, carpal tunnel didnt even begin to explain such a sudden onset of wide range neurological problems as I was experianceing at the time. Although he did admit that there might be a slight degree of carpal tunnel, due to my time as a secretary, and playing the piano. The way it was explained to us, was that carpal tunnel, that requires surgery, is a result of the compression of the medial nerve in the wrist. Refered pain can come from the neck, shoulder, arms etc. and mimic CTS. But it is the cause of the referred pain that needs to be treated to reduce symptoms and pain. CTS surgery wont correct it in and of itself. However, if a refered condition CAUSES irritation of the median nerve, ie Tendonitis in one arm causing the over use of the other hand, thereby causing carpal tunnel. But that's just my opinion as I understood my neurologist. I had ACM surgery, and after the surgery, the numbness and tingling almost completely disappeared for awhile from my hands and lower arms. Neuro said that I might possibly have mild CTS, but that if I could deal with it, he wouldnt suggest the other surgery unless it got worse. Hope you find the help you need, and God Bless ya!!!! Dawn
