You might ask on the SSDI forum, or for the condition that dr is seeing you for..

More members might see your question on those related forums..

Is it one single photo for their records?
Or photos of injuries or skin conditions?

I could see a single photo photo to put on your file/records, just for identification reasons..

If there is injuries or some problem that could documented by a few photos , that seems reasonable..

I guess I would ask them, to clarify for yourself , is this a new office wide thing? or only you?

Hi NoVoice,
Yes, Several doctors offices within the last year either took my picture or asked for a form of picture ID like a license, etc. Their reason was that there was health insurance theft and they wanted a way to check beyond simply asking your birth date.

Perhaps ask them why they want it and may put your mind at ease.

Yes, they want a picture ID now for whatever reason. I doubt that there is anyway out of that.

Hi,

I have 8 physicians and most of them have gone to an electronic record rather than paper charting. Many of them have taken my photo. A few have only "copied" my driver's license. The ONLY physician that has NOT required a photo is the ONE doctor that is still charting on paper.

The specialty does not seem to have anything to do with the demand for the photo.

One physician that required that my photo be taken has been my physician for over 35 years and calls me by name if I see him in the grocery store. He obviously knows me by sight so it is not just for identification. It must be some requirement and not just instituted by the physician's office practices.

Glad you brought up the topic. It will be nice to hear from others in various geographical areas if this is being done everywhere.

It has not happened to me in Australia.

All that my GP, psychiatrist, clinical psychologist and chemist/pharmacist have needed to see is my Medicare Card.

Without getting too bogged down in technical detail, all Australian citizens and permanent residents (like me) are entitled to a Medicare Card - it gives them, depending, free/highly subsidised access to health professionals, the public hospital system and prescription medications.

This is just seen as a "best practice" in the data collection & data matching part of electronic health records (EHL). Many insurance and provider systems now require this to ensure you are the correct person - this helps avoid treatment errors and fraud. In fact, many states states governing bodies (that oversee such systems) now are requiring photos along with ID.
