what happens if you just plug in the adapter and skip the cd part?
anything?? new hardware found ??

ahh- check this service too--

[Dependencies

What service Windows Installer needs to function properly:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) (H, M, P, T) ]
http://www.blackviper.com/wiki/Windows_Installer

this guy has a whole chart listed for services that need to be on or can be turned off to save some resources- I use the Safe list and it works nicely for me. you might want to check it out sometime-

First, you can't plug in adaptor. You HAVE to do the cd thing first.

I'm going to read the links you provide. AFTER I EAT DINNER and go crazy.

Today is not the day I need to be doing all this computer stuff. I think my head will split.

my goodness, It was SO much easier back in the AOL days when all one needed to hear is "You've got mail"

Now they have virtual keyboards, virtual this, computerized interfaces,

I want to go and make a quilt.

I would be a very nice Amish housewife.

lol

Will get back to you later.

And thanks much

Melody

Mel, can you go into control panel while that disc is in the player,
and see if it shows up as working?

I found this for Windows installer won't work:

http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com...wont-work.html

It this does not fix it, Google more "windows installer XP won't work"...

Is it a USB adapter?
just plug it in and see what happens. it won't break anything...either it will see what it is, or not, and then ask for the cd if it needs it..

When you plug in the adaptor, a little pop up appears in the lower right of the screen and it says 'new hardware found" That's it, nothing else.

And I clicked on the link that Mrs. D gave, and I followed instructions PERFECTLY. Got it on video.

I'm DOOMED!!!

lol

Melody
But I'll keep trying. Lots of people on the internet are having same issues. The thing in my case is that this is my old computer, and there is no modem attached so I can't have any verizon guy do a remote thing and take it over. The whole purpose was to have it become wi fi so I could have a wireless connection.

Oh brother.
lol

I've been reading all the various solutions for this problem. I have a 64 bit processor for the XP computer.

This answer REALLY impressed me.
-----------------------------------------------
Start your computer in safe mode, and then register the Msiexec.exe file. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Turn off computer or Shut Down.
Select the Restart option, and then click OK, or click Restart.
Press F8 before the Windows splash screen appears.
On the Windows Advanced Option menu, use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode option, and then press ENTER.
If you use a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the appropriate operating system from the list that is displayed, and then press ENTER.
Log on to the computer.
Click Start, click Run, type msiexec /regserver in the Open text box, and then click OK.

Note For 64-bit operating systems, you also have to reregister the 64-bit MSI installer. To do this, click Start, click Run, type %windir%\Syswow64\Msiexec /regserver in the Open text box, and then click OK.

On 64-bit editions of the Windows operating system, 32-bit binaries are located in %systemroot%\SysWow64 folder. The 64-bit binaries are located in the %systemroot%\System32 folder.
Click Start, and then click Turn off computer or Shut Down.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was really getting excited because I actually understood the whole safe mode thing. Then it started to say you have to re-register the 64 bit msi installer, etc. etc. then I burst out laughing and said out loud.

Seriously????

lol

I'll get there

lol

Well, I went to the Start, run and typed in a whole bunch of stuff to re-register and all I got for my trouble was a big pop up that told me "can't locate the file, you must be on the internet, blah blah blah.

I'm done. Returning it tomorrow to my local Radio Shack, getting my money and saving up for a another desktop. Don't need any bells and whistles.

One question.

Any NEW desktop that I might purchase (down a road), it will have Windows 7 naturally, but will it be WiFi capable, or will I have to go and buy this gadget yet again?

Thanks VERY much.

I now have a WiFi adaptor headache. I actually went into my kitchen, looked at my trays of sprouts and felt better.

lol

I wonder how much the neighborhood computer guy would charge to open it up and put a wifi card inside & set it up for you?
Or set up the netgear usb ??
Or does he sell laptops and would make a trade/ deal with you for desktop *w/secure wiped hard drive..
Or does he sell routers & a cable that will reach from the modem to the old computer. *but then you'd have the cable on the floor or along the walls.

We actually had a computer cable running thru the hallway and dining room for many months before we got into the wifi stuff. LOL
Son had set up a old computer as a server and had a multiport network connected, so we all had cables running into the basement to that thing..

But yep a laptop or netbook should have wifi all included and ready to use.
