Default outlook and funny noises

I have 2 questions, not funny noises in Outlook.

I have not had Outlook because my sister is still the "User" on computer and her email is defunct. We were afraid to switch computer users because of updates and if I add myself as a user I still can't use Outlook. LO And Behold!! I looked at the tool bar in Outlook and it has a place to 'Add User'..duh..That will work right? I'm still a little intimidated because of the request for 'outgoing' and 'incoming' email address but it said it could do that automatically? If that gets messed up I'm doomed.

Jo.Mar you have mentioned funny computer noises a couple of times, what kind of funny noises do you mean? There is a tone when I log off or shut down or both (forgot), occasionally I get a sound similar to that only a little more of a soft shriek..sounds like it is saying "Eek!" (probably is, poor thing ) It seems to happen when it isn't running very well. Everytime I decide to take it in for a tune up it fixes itself so I don't do it. Just wondering if I'm frying it.
thanks.

Question

Why not just use Yahoo.... it's free and easy. Never a problem.

Outlook can be such a pain. Hubby has to use it for work and
he HATES it.

Hi Mrs. D., I have regular email but I am trying to go up the food chain with the local clean air agency and it looks like Outlook is the best way to contact the director. The woodsmoke is so bad in my town the EPA told them to clean it up or be fined but they aren't enforcing the burn bans in my neighborhood. The smoke here at night from old, uncertified woodstoves is unbelievable, pea soup sometimes. I think it has reached dangerous levels for me but my neighbors with good lungs are complaining as well. One woman in my apartment complex with heart problems died, she wasn't in very good health but I saw her struggling during the stagnant air advisory and I know that played a small roll at least. Another has been hospitalized every year with pneumonia for the past three years.

Sorry to vent. I'm pretty angry. They do contact people after a complaint but the result has mainly been to teach them to be sneakier. I know people are just trying to stay warm but I also know these emissions levels are illegal in my state and the people just don't seem to care as long as they get away with it. There is grant money available this year to help people upgrade their stoves but no one has done it.

I think there is a certain amount of local politics involved and suspect contacting the director isn't going to do much but Outlook looks like it may be the way to contact EPA too, someone in my area did that and got some results.
Thanks,
Judi

There's also Thunderbird, by Mozilla - free and set up is easy, just put in your name & email address & password and it will do a search for the settings and set it up for you.

If you can get to the case easily , or is it a laptop?
anyway, listen around to locate where the sound is loudest.

most likely is the fan squealing - if the fan stops then that;s when things can overheat.

If you have pets or if it's never been cleaned inside that can cause the fan to bind & squeal.

http://duckduckgo.com/?q=cleaning+your+computer

the hard drive usually makes squeeks, clunks or thumps.

Thanks, I'm sure it is the fan as it only happens occasionally when the computer is hotter than usual. I looked at the link on cleaning them, I have done some of that but am too chicken to open a laptop. I think I need to run one of the virus detection programs you have mentioned in other threads, I never know if there is something wrong or if its just my cheesy dial up.

I don't think Thunderbird will work, I have to get Outlook. there's a link on their web site for contact and it opens Outlook. I tried to paste the email address and just email them but got rejected as spam. I really hate fighting about the whole thing.

You don't need Outlook to contact any specific place or person, it is just a program to collect your email, that's all it does, well and a calendar and planner if I recall.

Possibly the email provider you use now is flagged as having lots of spam & that's why you got blocked from sending.

I would make a new separate email address for this, any of the free email providers should work, like Yahoo, or gmail, both can be used online at their website or downloaded onto your own computer (pop mail).

For you the online webmail might work better, nothing to set up really just make an account and start using it.

Give one of them a try and see if it works for you, nothing to lose if it doesn't.

Yahoo ( https://login.yahoo.com/config/login_verify2?&.src=ym )
Gmail ( https://accounts.google.com/SignUp?s...&ltmpl=default )

Blush embarassing

This is so embarrassing, there are some very funny jokes about seniors and computers and they are all true.

I did get myself added to Outlook. It said 'Log on' ....um..log on to what? I guess it meant log on to the computer which is what I was trying to avoid in the first place as I didn't want to take my sis off as the user. I'm afraid to take her off, I don't know what will happen to automatic updates, shes administrator (repairs?), etc, Does it matter? I was going to just add myself as computer user but I don't know her password and was afraid I couldn't get back on as her, I have a shortcut now. Shes in Finland, I don't know if she will answer email to try to get password if she remembers it. I'm also not sure why she chose to visit Finland during the worst winter since the last ice age.

I thought Outlook was a business email thing and only talked to itself? When I click on their 'contact us' link it opens Outlook 'to' their email address and 'from' my sisters Outlook. I got rejected as spam when I pasted their email address onto my usual email and sent that. Will it work if I erase my sisters address and put in mine?

Thanks'
Judi

It will be much simpler for you if you just sign up and use Yahoo or Gmail - you won't have to mess with Outlook or settings.

You can choose any name for your new email address ( it will let you know if that name is already being used, then you just add something or make a new name till it is accepted), you'll still get your other email how ever you get it now.

I have 5 different email addresses, just because..

About the computer admin account, If you can't sign on to the admin account how are you using it now, as a guest or a limited user?

Those accounts can't do too much as far as major changes, only the admin/owner account can do those.
I just checked and my dh isn't allowed to make a new user, he has a limited account. I'm the admin/owner, main pc fixer person..
Guest account can do even less.

If sis gives you the password then you can use her admin accnt to make a new user account for you to use & I would leave her admin as it is.

If Outlook asks for a log on- she has a password set up for security reasons, I do the same thing - a password to log on to my computer admin accnt & password for my email to open.

Businesses often use Outlook because it has a lot of built in extras for organizing, meetings, and contacts.

[Will it work if I erase my sisters address and put in mine? ]
You can try it and see. It won't break anything.

Oh was it a link to contact the clean air agency??
and that's when Outlook opened up?
If so now I understand.. I thought you were trying to contact the Outlook dept at Microsoft.

Yes a contact us link will pop up the default email program- it may or may not work to send an email with your address.
It depends on if your sister had the same kind of email provider.

example-
A gmail email can't be sent with a yahoo email address as the main one in outlook or any email program

Just so you know, and it's probably not connected to the noise you're hearing, but if I have left a CD in the drive then my computer makes a strange noise booting up and shutting down.
