Default I have a question about Optimum Wi fi

Okay, and forgive me if this is stupid but the only way I learn stuff is by asking stupid questions. (Remember how I learned about laptops?) I came here and got my answers.

Alan and I are moving in about 3 weeks. We are going for optimum online. which includes Cablevision for tv and Optimum wi fi.

Here is where I get confused.

We will be bringing Alan's computer (which has an ethernet cable and goes (right now into my dsl modem.) I have my own wi fi network so I use my laptop to access it.

When we move, The guys from Optimum will come in and set up everything and hook up the compute to the modem. I will also need a router for my laptop.

the guy who lives there now has the exact same set up. He has a cable modem and right next to that he has a router for his laptop.

I asked him "Did they set up the wi fi netwok for you so all you had to do was go on the laptop and it automatically connected to the wi fi network

He said "No, they handed me a cd rom and I set up the wi fi network myself.

I then went home, called up Optimum Online and asked the same question. I then said "When the guy comes in to hook up everything, I want him to SET UP- THE WI FI so all I have to do is sit at my laptop and go online"

He said "no problem, that's what they do"

So my question is DO ANY OF YOU HAVE OPTIMUM ONLINE, and how did you set up you wi fi?

And here's another good question.

What if a person only has a laptop and not a PC with a tower.

How does one go online if one is not CONNECTED to a modem/router?

I always thought "First you have the pc connected via an ethenet cable, then you go and buy a laptop, then you call the tech guys, (this is how I did it in my present apartment with Verizon DSL. They initially sent me a modem/router (one unit). I called the tech guy. He said "Go over to the modem, look on the bottom and give me the serial number".

He said "can you go on the othe computer. I then went on the main compute in my house, the guy walked me though the whole thing, we set up the wi fi network. Let's say I called it "Melody's Wifi Network". We set it up, I got a password. He then told me 'you are all set, go over to the laptop, and click on "Internet Explorer". ( I think I had to configure my wi fi settings first which he walked me though).

As soon as I did that, I saw (on the bottom right) the wi fi network I just named. I then was able to see my signal strength and I was able to connect after that anytime I went on my laptop.

So if you can just answer my questions, Id be eternally grateful.

So to put it simply.

does the OPTIMUM guy do it all or will they hand me a cd and I have to do it myself and do I do it from my laptop or from the PC?

Very stressful, this moving thing. I just want it to be over already.

Thanks much.

Melody
