Default Need some Advice

Due to advanced periodontal disease I am in the process of having all of my teeth extracted. I have five left on the top and two left on the bottom to be extracted.

My two front teeth had infection and pretty severe bone loss prior to extraction. Though they have both been out for close to a month now it appears that the bone is not filling in very much.

I have noticed over the last few days the left front or where the left front tooth was is sore. I noticed yesterday it feels like there is a sharp place (tooth or bone) in that area. When I press on that area it is very sore and give the whole area a very strange sensation. (like above in the sinus area).

My question is what could this be that is sore in that area? My nose on that side feels odd almost stuffy.

Could there be an infection there?

Thanks for any suggestions and/or reply's.

Default Welcome

Hi Timeless,

Sorry to hear your going through this! I have just had my uppers done due to advanced periodontal as well and immediate dentures put in.

You should certainly contact the Dr. regarding the 'sore spots', they could be bone spurs, pieces of the tooth that may not have come out at extraction, it is similar to a splinter, generally the gum will work the spur out, but sometimes it may need to be taken out by your Dr. Don't be alarmed, it is not uncommon. One thing I learned through this is to contact the Dr. at any time you feel discomfort, that is what they are there for! you are not being a 'bother', you are taking care of yourself, so pick up the phone to them.

Are you doing the salt water rinses daily? I noticed that really helped my healing process and I still do it daily during my cleaning routine.

I am just a patient and Bryanna will also post to you and she is GREAT! So keep a watch for her answer.

I wish you the best during your procedures and this is a great place to come for some comfort!

Looking forward to your posts and keep a positive attitude that once it is all done and said, you will look in the mirror with a great big smile and will be healthier as well.

Good luck
K

Thank you. I read some of the other post and really am glad I found this forum to connect with other people who are, or have gone through this procedure. It has been a long journey and we still have a ways to go before it is complete.

I am having to take it slow because i have some other unresolved health issues that keep me from finishing it all at once.

I am hopeful about getting the teeth pulled that this will help my overall health , although I do not believe it is the cause of all the unresolved on going issues.

Yes, i use the salt water rinses all the time.

Tell me how your procedures have gone so far and are you in full dentures or partials. I will be getting a full set on the top and a partial on the bottom.

If it becomes necessary then I may have to get a full set on the bottom and if so i would consider implants to snap it onto at that time. It is all very confusing to me.

Hi timeless,

Welcome to Neurotalk!

With regard to the way the extraction sites are healing.... when there is significant bone loss from periodontal disease, the surgical sockets of where the teeth use to be are not very deep which means there is not much of a hole to fill in. So they will look flatter or thinner than normal.

With regard to the soreness of the extraction sites..... you could have a bony spur that is working it's way out or you could have a splintered piece of bone that may need to be removed. The other symptoms that you are having may be indicative of an infection. It would be wise to see your dentist to evaluate the area properly.

It is nice to have you here as you share your dental journey with us! You will get alot of feedback from "K" as she has recently been through extractions and dentures and has great suggestions!! Her optimistic attitude is very contagious ;-))

Please keep us posted on how you're doing!

Bryanna
