Two months ago my 6 year old dental implant which had been giving me problems for a year (gun inflammation) got extremely painful. A visit to my Prosthedontist revealed infection and bone loss. He sent me to my periodontist who determined that there was an abcess around the implant that had caused severe bone loss and scheduled removal two weeks later. A few days later I developed a bad non-allergy related rash around my eye and a 2" red spot on my leg. I called the prostedontist who didnt think they were related but gave me Amoxicillin the rashes subsided after 2 weks The implant was removed and the remaining infection scraped from the bone. Afterwards I experienced severe swelling and pain which continued for over a week. I called 3 days ago and the periodontist gave me another round of amoxicillin. The next day the spot on my leg reappeared and keeps getting redder.and my eye has gotten red and swollen again. The swelling of my bone is starting to go down also Is it possible that I could have developed cellulitis from the infection that had been in my jawbone for quite some time?

Hi Trixie,
What I don't understand is that if you have been seeing a periodontist and prosthodontist on a routine basis for care... how come this infection was not picked up sooner? Oral infections of any kind can spread through the lymphatic system and cause skin eruptions and inflammation elsewhere on the body. You might be best off consulting your physician and explain to him the history with this tooth. Unfortunately, many dentists rarely connect the mouth with the rest of the body and are not the best "doctors" when it comes to diagnosing physical ailments.. even when they are the result of a dental problem. Have you consulted with your physician? Bryanna Quote:

Bryanna, thanks so much for your response. I have been contemplating going in to see my physician and your response has confirmed that I need to do that now. I will be calling today for an appointment. After I talk with him I will let you know what he says.
Thanks! |

Thanks for you quick response. I was thinking a visit to my doctor might be best but wasn't sure. I have made an appointment with my MD tomorrow. I will let you know what he says after I see him.
Thanks again! Trixie Quote:

Well, good news. No cellulitis, just dermatitis that happened to show up at the same time! Thanks for your response.
