Default odd smells

Hi I have an odd question. In March I was sick for 3 plus weeks with a bad head and chest cold. Towards the end of it I started to have this odd smell that smells like a stale bar room that people have smoked in. Just an aweful smell. Any ways it would get better and now it returns in the late afternoon. I smell it particularly in one room of my home. Sometimes I feel as though it goes to bed with me. I never smell it outdoors or else where. So it makes me want to be outside alot.

I do not know if it is my sinuses, the house( I do have dogs, the house has been closed up due to a wet April) OR if it is something to do with my Keppra, trileptal or Lamictal. When I smell it I do not feel a seizure coming or anything.

Does anyone relate to this? If not that is okay just wondering what I am dealing with, as it is unpleasant.
Thanks everyone.

Hi Cedar,
What you are describing is an aura sz. Often I will be sitting in my living room and all of the sudden start to smell natural gas or a burnt odor. This is a form of a aura sz. and just like you I feel no sz. starting. Aura sz. are also known as simple partial sz. The reason why you might have gotten this is because you have been sick with a cold or sinus problems. Every time when I'm sick with a cold I always end up having some type of sz. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

How long does this last , this is lasting hours several hours. Why by the way do I not smell it anywhere other than in the living room? Do they ever stop for you? I feel doomed come evening time.
Is there really anything one can do to stop them from happening?
Well thanks I quess
Take care Sue

Thank you Sue for posting that! I too, just got over a sinus infection/cold and I keep smelling something strange when I walk into my kitchen. I have searched everywhere and can't find a thing... I think it's my sense of smell.. That makes sense.....It's like it's in the air, but when I go outside, just like Cedar, it goes away.....

I don't feel so strange now....

Hi Folks,
If you have been taking cold or sinus meds for a few days it can slow up the seizure med (AED's) through your blood stream and lead to an aura sz. I will often have them only in my living room sitting on the sofa. The aura sz. usual lasts me only a few seconds and then goes away but I will have many of them during the day/night. If this is a constant odor that won't go away you might want to let your neuro what's going on to play it safe. In the past the moment I began to have an aura sz. I will tighten up the muscles in my body and make my hands into tight fists by doing this it stops the aura sz. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You Both!

The thing about my odd smell is that I have had this since the end of March almost daily. It generally happens only in my living room/den a room that I sit in alot do not smell it most of the day. Then come about 5:30-6 pm when I sit there to eat and watch The news I begin to smell the bad stale smoky room smell.. It is the best way to describe the odor I do not smoke. I just want to open windows or go outside. If I do it goes away. Come back to the room I smell it.
Then I smell it from 6pm to when ever I go to bed. I get rather stuffy like I use to when I smoked which is 27 years ago.
Then I will sometimes not always take the smell with me to bed. Have on one occasion woke up to smell it.

Then come morning never smell it again until later afternoon.

Seizure? Sinus smell? Meds causing it? Bad smell in house? If the latter why do I only smell it late day?
A real mystery and one I do not enjoy at all.

So you can see why I would say, "a seizure for this long, how could it be?"

Will tell my dr. but I am not sure anyone can figure this out

Thanks for all your thoughts, I just smelled it and it is 5pm here we go again. I am going outside!!
Why is this happening is my concern.
Thanks everyone.

Hi Cedar,
I ask myself is this could be a pattern in your seizures and that's why you smell to smoke odor at 5:30 pm. Have you ever kept a record of your sz. writing down what time your seizures happen along with a discription? My epi told me to do this and you can see what days of the month as well as what time I'm more likely to have a seizure. Another thing you might want to do is call your pharmacist and tell them what you are taking along with any over the counter meds and they could tell you if this is what's causing the problem. I wish I could help you more. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

Thanks,
I appreciate your imput. I have and do keep a journal of my seizures. They have very rarely been at 5:30 . So tonight I spent 1 hour outside and did not smell this odor at all. came in and within 5 mins I smeeled again. So I personally think it is something in the house even though I am the only one smelling it.
I do have a very sensitive sense of smell.

Lastly, I am not taking any over the counter things. So that can not be it! A true mystery. But I will talk with my Dr. for sure this week.

I am stumped, guess I will go and live outside! HA!

Thank you truly, Cedar
