Usually it is some sort or nerve compression/impingement somewhere along the arm, neck, shoulder that can cause that.

Has he have any kind of repetitive motion injuries?
Ever any whiplash or neck/upper body injury?

There are several conditions colloquially called 'claw hand'. Some can be found in this article, and others by googling: claw hand and the Searches related to same at the bottom of the first page of search results.

Dupuytren’s contracture, a genetic condition, afflicts many in the UK, including Margaret Thatcher and Bill Nighy.

about 8-9 years ago my hand started doing this , until one day i woke up and couldn't move.. my wife brought m,e to hospital where they gave me a strong dose of a muscle relaxant then they sent me to a neurologist.. where i got an mri the test showed a herniated disk with nerve compression . the they did an reg, or emg IDK the stuck me with needles .. it was nerve conduction study and it showed, carpal tunnel and nerve impingement to left arm. I was told that when hand locks up its important to stretch it out and not let it remain it its claw form. I went to pt and through them stretching the neck , traction, and a HEP. I got limited movement to hand.. "I waited to long to stop 100perc. damage" I suggest you sw dr re this possibility.. good luck
