Heart Has anyone else experimented with Switching from GMOs to Organic Food?

Hi,
I'm really curious about others' experience.

I didn't know about GMOs until I watched a film called Forks Over Knives, which for some reason I'd thought was going to be a murder mystery. Well, maybe it was... but not the run of the mill kind.

After watching that I tweeted about it and was told to watch Food, Inc. Then after that Genetic Roulette came out.

I was really curious to see if merely switching from GMOs to Organic food would cause me to lose weight, as had been suggested in one or more of the films.

It was easy to order Organic, Free Range Chicken Soup, to replace Campbell's, and Organic pasta... Italian in origin... But replacing my coffee creamer was a real challenge. It took months to mix up a powdered replacement that allowed me to desire a cup of coffee, as I had always done in the past.

At about the same time, I'd learned that all vitamin B12 comes from micro-organisms, which are plentiful in the air and soil. I decided that when I ate celery and lettuce out of my garden, I'd just eat them... no washing, so I'd get the micro-organisms.

See, one of the impetuses to switching was thinking about how the pesticide engineered into the GMOs was probably killing off micro-organisms before I got their B12 content.

So, I was delighted when I found I could use a fraction of the sublingual methylcobalamin as previously, and have no added symptoms of low vitamin B12. BIG savings. Easily paid for any additional cost in my food budget.

And... over a few months I lost two sizes... SO easy. No exercise involved, other than reaching for Organics...

Happiness!

I'm curious to hear what others have experienced.

Heart One thing that surprised me

When I switched from GMO to Organic food I started looking at labels on food, more carefully than I had in the past. Before that I took the BIG, BOLD words on food packaging at face value, like Betty Crocker's 100% REAL POTATOES in her instant mashed potatoes. I kept them on hand to thicken soups and casseroles.

When I read the little print label I was surprised that the 100% REAL POTATOES contained soy and corn. Both soy and corn are GMO in commercial foods. And, it turns out soy isn't all that good for us even when it's Organic unless it's fermented. So Tofu? NOT a health food. Big surprise to me!

My beloved coffee creamer? also soy and corn. That was the hardest to replace, but I've finally got a mix of powdered Organic ingredients that provides a very satisfying creamer effect in my coffee.

I wish I was hearing what others have experienced after switching from GMOs to Organic.

My main purpose in switching was to get away from the pesticides built into genetically engineered food crops, mainly because I felt they were affecting my ability to get B12 from the micro-organisms that produce ALL B12.

So, I'm not surprised that one outcome has been related to a problem associated with low vitamin B12... Basically, after I'd been living in my condo built over a full outdoor toilet pit for a couple years, I was having HUGE problems with balance, memory, breathing... and diarrhea. Once the pit was found doctors stopped thinking my problem was asthma. But, upon learning of my low vitamin B12, I was told that I'd just have to learn to cope with the almost constant diarrhea. Not really as bad as full blown diarrhea, but still bad enough to tie me to my home.

Then I learned about brown rice, and that helped significantly. I was delighted.

Now, having switched to Organic food and having eliminated GMOs from my daily food intake, I'm noticing that there's more improvement, a lot more.

I wonder if anyone else found that?

Default GMO free too

We've been very careful to avoid GMO products. We eat only organic meats and stay a way from most processed foods. Unless we go out to dinner though. We've been doing this for at least 10 years. I can't say there's been a profound response but even before we paid attention to GMO, our diets were pretty clean. Most processed foods have GMO soy, corn and canola oils in them and a daily diet of these is just not healthy.

I feel that GMO crops are problematic on so many levels. The entire "processed food" industry is focused on producing cheap, addictive foods for profits. Even if you are healthy today, I would encourage everyone to reduce or eliminate the consumption of GMO food just for the sake of the environment alone. GMO foods allow farmers to use more pesticides than ever before. Without a strong, healthy environment, all life suffers.

Hi Marlene,
Thanks SO much for your input.

I wonder if you saw no "profound response" to your switch to Organic because 10 years ago GMOs had only been in our food for about 10 years, and I doubt that in the early years they were as prevalent as today.

I would guess that you preserved your and your family's health significantly by eating Organic all those years, while the rest of us were eating GMOs in ignorance.

I am really amazed at the difference in my gastrointestinal system since switching. It's taken about 6 months, but the difference is phenomenal.

Yes, there's also the issue of what all the pesticide does to our earth. I read in a book on women's health that pesticide is found in almost all female breast tissue. What I mean is that almost all women have it in their breast tissue.

I feel sure that if Americans knew the health hazards involved in eating GMOs that they would steer clear, for fear of cancer if nothing else.

But, the FDA does no warning about GMOs. Probably because the FDA has Monsanto people in very high places.

I think GMO foods made their appearance in 1990 so that makes sense. California prop 37 failed this fall. If it would have passed, then they would have been required to label their foods if it was GMO. Big business threw lots of money at it to defeat it.

One of the main differences I've noticed after switching from GMO foods to organic, is a total change in my gastro intestinal system. It's taken about 6 months... but, it's a real change.

For the sake of brevity, let's just say I'm now having to buy 50% less toilet paper.

One of the hardest parts of switching was giving up my powdered coffee creamer. I loved the way it made my coffee taste. And, after months of trying to mix up ingredients that fairly closely matched the commercial creamer, I got something that worked, but wasn't quite as great.

Still, there's no way I would go back to the health problems I had while eating and using gmo products.

I even stopped using gmo soy for my candles!

Anyway, yesterday on Twitter someone mentioned Oatmeal Milk. Apparently you can buy it and use it instead of soy milk. Soy has so many bad side affects.

The article posted with the tweet said you could make your own oatmeal milk... it suggested making oatmeal, then blending it, and using it as milk.

I decided to try putting uncooked Old Fashioned (i.e. not instant) oatmeal in my coffee grinder... and grinding.

Worked really well.

I added the powder to the powdered creamer ingredients I was already using: coconut milk, whey protein, maca, and a tad of organic dried cane sugar
... and it was pretty good. It provided a bit of a creamy texture to my coffee, which is a part of what I loved about the commercial creamer.

So, you might want to try Oatmeal Milk. :-)
