Hi lallsy and welcome to NeuroTalk.

I am wondering if it is something as simple as fluid in the ear(s) is the problem. If the Eustachian tube(s) is blocked or fluid filled you may hear crackling, popping or squishing sounds, but you should be able to tell the sound is coming from your ears. You may be able to hear these sounds if the tube(s) are trying to drain.

Please talk to your Primary Care Physician for advice and/or diagnosis.
