Looks like Darvon products (propoxyphene) will become history
shortly: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090130/ap_on_he_me/darvon This has been a long time coming. This drug is highly addictive to a segment of the population, and has lately been considered ineffective. It also appears that Eli Lilly has divested the patent to another company.

What then for so many of us using darvocet? I assume it would fall victim to the demise of darvon.

As far as I know, we don't have the trade name Darvocet in Australia, but we do have 2 very popular analgesics called Digesic and Doloxone.
Both are the same medication with different trade names, and consist of dextropropoxyphene and paracetamol, which may be the same as your Darvocet. The removal of these meds will leave a big gap in the choice of pain killers for many people. It looks like soon the only choice out there after paracetamol, will be either SR Morphine, or SR Oxycodone.

However, I take four a day which none of my docs like but they live with it. (LOL -- that's funny) But lately the combo I take is not lasting the six hours between doses and I approached my neuro about maybe trying morphine with the gabapentin. He instead (as did my pain management doc) thought it a good idea to reach out to the pain mangement group at USF in Tampa. He feels that he cannot help me anymore; that he is limited. |

I think the FDA will accept communications from doctors and patients who oppose this move.
So if you have strong feelings about this, now is the time to contact them.

I didn't even know they still manufactured Darvon! Wasn't Darvon that one that used to be in a capsule form, and druggies would take the 'magic' little tiny pill from the filler and shoot it up or some such nonsense?
My best friend takes Darvocet and she's a recovering alcoholic. Darvocette doesn't do a thing for my pain.

Yes, it was Darvon Compound with the little pink pellet inside the capsule. (was the propoxyphene part) Here is a story for you. When I first was training-- I did a summer in a hospital. One of my tasks was to remove the pink pellet from Darvon Compound capsules (Lilly) for orders from surgeons on the OB/GYN floor. Seems this rendered the capsule to an aspirin/caffeine placebo and was a test to see if the hysterectomy patients were "really" in pain. Darvocet came out when the patent expired on Darvon Compound. Back then Tylenol w/Codeine was just coming out. The only codeine mixture then was Empirin Compound #3 and 4. That oldie had phenacetin in it (APC w/Codeine) and the toxicity of phenacetin was being revealed, so the Tylenol formulation was considered a huge medical improvement. I only took it once... I had two wisdom teeth pulled in the morning and went to work with the RX and took one there when the numbing wore off, and that drat @#$% Darvon made me so sick, I couldn't even stand UP. I was so dizzy from it, and had NO pain relief! Never took another! Always regarded it as evil actually myself!

And WHAT!? To see if they were 'really' in pain!? Holy cow! It's been such a long time since I've had that stuff but I do remember being prescribed Darvon on many occasion. This darvocette stuff...nope, doesn't do anything for me.
