Didn't know fish oil supps good for cholesterol. Supposed to also be good for MS. Dr. Allen Bowling, of Rocky mountain MS Center, says that, if he recommended only one supp for MS, that would be it. ~ Faith

I have been taking simivastin for several years. I showed the two conflicting articles to my neuro last Spring and he just seemed perplexed. Since it is working in lowering my cholesterol, he felt I should stay on it. I will probably discuss statins with my pcp at my next appointment.

I have been on Lipitor for several years. My family has a long history of guys dying young from heart disease, kidney disease, and strokes. The MS history in my family is limited to my cousin who has never taken a DMD and has had MS for at least 15 years, and only occasionally needs a cane to walk. I figure I am alot more likely to die from heart disease than MS...so I take Lipitor, fish oil, aspirin, and I exercise as often as I can.

I'm on sivistatin with my cardiologist PCP and neuro all agreeing it is good for me. Heart disease and strokes are rampant in my family (both sides) so I decided when exercise and diet modification were making no difference I would go on it. I get my levels tested every quarter and for me it worked.
I would tak to your doctor and make a decision based on your history and severity. LDL/HDL and triglicerides will tell you more than a total cholesterol. I would also mention it also matters what you levels are (ex. getting high-ish or "really, really dangerous") We are all a bit different and have different needs. Good luck regardless! ![]()

I spoke to my neuro specialist and he agrees that diet should be my first line of attack. I did confess to eating lots of garbage in the last 6 months or so. He said that since 'there was so little of me' it's not like I can lose any weight. So modify diet and re test. I didn't bring up the two studies that seem to point at Beta and statins being a no no. He never seems keen to discuss studies and research etc. Thank you for all your input |

I think many doctors are not the all-knowing people they appear. I've had doctors( considered good) give me differing advice. I look for second opinions to get agreeing advice. Doctors are only human. My GCP listens to me and when I insisted my Urge Incontinence was neurological and not due to age and births, sent me to a neurologist (sort of begrudgingly) who DXed MS from LP. Evoked Responses, and MRI. Trust your gut too, along with opinions.
