For your head (if you get itching there), your doc can rx Betaderm Scalp Lotion (Betamethason Valerate 0.1%), which is a liquid. It works wonderfully.

For your body, the same company puts out a cream version ... which I haven't tried yet, but will be asking for (since I altready know that the liquid works so well for my head).

Alternatively, ice packs held on the spot (yeah, you can trick your mind), Hydrocortisone cream 1% (rx) or OTC Benadryl have been helpful for me in the past.
