Default MS Bladder question

Hey you guys... So I have the neurogenic flaccid bladder thing where I can't empty my bladder all the way which means self cathing. Since I broke my back, the problem has gotten worse. For some reason my neuro prescribed me Detrol when I was there to help with the bladder thing.

Has any one else tried this? Because I know that Detrol is prescribed for overactive bladder to help calm the bladder spasms. The problem I have is that my bladder doesn't spasm when it is full. Anyways, started the meds today, and it is another med that has the "may cause drowsiness" label on it. I am now on 7 meds, 6 of which all cause drowsiness, and she wonders why I am having such an issue with the MS Fatigue!

Sorry to hear about this.

Never tried detrol. We discussed it, but the urologist thought it would make my condition worse. I have both retention and control issues. A strange double whammy.

My doc had me try Flomax but it made me too dizzy. Couldn't drive or even walk straight on it. But his other advice so far has helped a bit. I go to the bathroom every two hours - whether I feel like it or not. And I do those exercises (can't remember the name) to help with the control part.

Hope the med works out for you and doesn't add to you fatigue.

I am going to have to shoot my doctor. This was the conclusion I came to last night after the full effects of this pill hit me. I was driving along on my first trip in months down to visit the family in Hanover. By the time I got there...

My mouth was so dry that my tongue was sticking to the roof of my mouth and I felt like I had swallowed a bottle of glue. My eyes were so dry I thought my contacts were going to turn to powder. I get to the house for dinner. I walk in and grab a glass and down 16 ounces of water before attempting to speak. I asked for saline for the contacts, which fortunately was on hand.

In the course of the 3 hours I was there, I drank 64 ounces of water.... and I tried to go potty. I had to force it so hard that the broken bones in my back decided to pop and shift, and hardly anything came out. I packed two bottles of water for my trip back, which lasted me all of 20 minutes before they were empty and I was stopping to buy more. I finally made it home, and today it is finally working it's way out of my system.

The only good things I can say about this drug-> it stopped the sweating thing all together, and it dried out the sinus thing I had going on. Of course it is zapping all moisture from my body, and I was not sweating it out or peeing it out... so where did it go??

Never again!

That is weird! Sorry you had to go through the moisture zapping thing. I'd definitely talk to your doc about that adventure! The last thing you need to do is to retain water.

That definitely doesn't sound normal, Legzz. I've not tried any of the new meds they have for control issues. So far I've been lucky......but I'm always home and near a bathroom. My issue is when I need to go I need to go right then. No advance warning. So I'd better be near a potty!

Well Kitty this one may work for you if you can get passed the dryness. LOL 64 ounces of water and I didn't even have the urge to go, but I forced myself to go because I was afraid my bladder would explode at some point. There was one that they gave me for water retention when I was on IVSM the first time that worked great but I cannot remember the name of it. I wonder if that one would work now?

But seeing as I am doing the Phys Therapy thing two days a week, I cannot afford to be dehydrated.

Have you told your doctor about this adventure? That is very concerning.

As for the med was it possibly HCTZ (Hydrochlorothiazide), or Spironolactone? those are both diuretics. I know this because my hubby is on HCTZ for blood pressure and I'm on Spironolactone (a potassium sparing diuretic) for periodic paralysis.

Hopefully you can remember the name of the medicine and your doctor will write you a new prescription that will actually give you some relief!

This was Detrol LA. I will most definitely be calling the doc on Monday and thanking her for that little adventure. Wishing I could remember the one they put me on before. I can probaby call the old neuro and ask, I think it started with a D too.

Oops, sorry I don't think I was clear when I was talking about the meds. I was trying to help suggest some of the names that the previous meds could have been. Calling the old neuro would probably be helpful, your current neuro should also be able to look at your charts and find it as well. He should have all of your records from your previous neuro.

I also forgot to ask, did the dehydrated feeling along with not being able to urinate go away when you stopped the Detrol LA? If not you should probably call your doctor today. I hope this gets better for you very fast!

The dehydrated feeling finally slacked up yesterday afternon but I have been drinking water like crazy trying to flush that stuff out of my system. Still can't go, but that has been going on since october so i am kind of used to it. Just annoying to have to do the cath thing.
