For those who have had pain from optic neuritis, where is the pain located? Is it ever located on the very inside corner of the eye?

Hmm. Every once in a while, when I move my eye, I get a sharp, stabbing pain in the corner of my eye, right where it "meets" my nose. I can't duplicate it (not that I want to) nor can I really figure out what exactly I'm doing when it happens--in other words, if I'm glancing right or left or whatever. I have an eye appointment in a few weeks. Not seeing any sparkles or anything.

Mine was the entire eyeball, but it was mostly directly behind my eye.
Closest description I can use, imagine root canal pain, but directly behind your eyeball. (root canal pain is nerve pain too. I thought optic nerve pain was worse tho) It's very painful, especially when you move your eye side to side, but can also hurt at any movement of your eye, or be a constant pain. You dont realize how often you move your eye until you get pain in your optic nerve. (you pretty much move your eyes constantly, even when you think you're not moving your eyes)

I'm hoping it's not ON and that it's nothing serious--it's just a quick, stabbing pain that only lasts a couple of seconds.

Go see your eye doctor.
One thing I've learned from optic neuritis, is never ever ignore it.

Mine was more in the middle. Mine involved blind spot, double vision, and inability to watch TV without pain. I would say it was not as severe in me as some other nerve pain I've had such as Peripheral Neuropathy and Shingles. But it stopped me from doing things and made me wear an eye patch when out in the sun.

I've only had ON once and don't remember any pain, just discomfort.

When I had my second episode of optic neuritis a few years ago, all it did was give me diplopia (double vision). There wasnt any pain with it, but I had vertigo and a weird headache where I felt like I'd been drinking or something.
The first time I had ON and this last time, there was lots of pain involved. It's one of those pains where if you've felt it once, you know immediately what it is if you ever feel it again. It's an unmistakable pain. As soon as I felt it start this last time, I pretty much did a "OHHHHH <SWEAR WORD>!!!" and went running screaming to the eye doctor...twice, ran to the neuro so he could see me finally in a full blown flare of something. (he always sees me just before, or just after a flare) and then begged for drugs, steroids, anything! because the pain was so horrible. (2037 on the 1 to 10 pain scale)

B2Y, it's different for everyone so don't panic yet.
![]() The first time I had it there was no pain.....but I did have severe double vision. The second time I had it there was discomfort but no double vision. Just cloudy....almost like I was looking through a frosted window. The second time it was just my left eye. Most all my MS sx are on the left. I just had my eyes examined last Thursday and told the eye doctor about my two episodes of ON. After the examination he said my Optic Nerves looked very healthy and it didn't appear that they were damaged due to the previous bouts with ON. I felt very fortunate for that. Just make notes of all your symptoms so you can tell the doctor when you go. Let us know how it goes. ![]()
