I am on SSDI, and the rules are, that seeing as I have RRMS, there is a chance of recovery, so I have to be on SSDI for 2 years before I qualify for medicare. I applied for medicaide, and was denied because I have no children and am under the age of 65 and do not qualify for, ready for this one, MEDICARE! I qualify for medicare this February so its only a few more months. I can turn around and apply for medicaide. We move back to IN next April and will have everything transferred there. IN is much more of a giving state than TN. So, you see, its not from a lack of trying on my part, its from a lack of help from the state of TN or the plain old US government.

I went without insurance for 2 years, too, while waiting to be eligible Medicare. It's a long 2 years but thank goodness nothing catastrophic happened while I was waiting. Seems like once they agree you're disabled and you qualify for SSDI you should be able to qualify immediately for Medicare. Strange rules.

I believe I qualified for Medicare as soon as I got Social Security, and I was well under the normal Medicare age. But that was decades ago and I cannot be sure of that. Pretty sure though. Can it vary from state to state? At that time my husband was still working so we had a secondary from his work, with Medicare for me.
