I've been scorching hot my entire life, especially my head, but lately I have something new happening. I've been really struggling to control my body temperature at night. I'll be freezing, then drenched in sweat. Its like I'm breaking a fever, but my temp by thermometer is normal. The worst is when I'm simultaneously freezing cold and burning hot. I don't even understand what I'm feeling! Do I crank the AC down or add 6 blankets? lol
Anyone else have problems like this? I don't have any thyroid issues. I really think this is the MS, because the onset has coincided with a few other older symptoms flaring up. |

Yeti-
The answer is yes, I have this problem- long standing. Polar fleece on and off as well as socks and gloves/fingerless gloves-and I am not just talking winter! There is no winning this except to have layers. I even have a hat for bed. What ever works, eh? That is a temperature thing. Not related, it seems, to either the environment or my real body temperature. It is perception. There is also the perverse paresthesias that seem right on the edge of burning hot and icy cold. Sometimes an icy hot! Maddening. ![]() Many here have either or both of this temp related situations. For the first, invest in light weight fleece and for the second, endure or if you can't stand it, talk w your Neuro about some help (often gabapentin). Needless to say, other medical causes should be looked at as well. Keep warmish, ANN |

I'm already on gabapentin for TN, its been a miracle drug for me.
I also had the paresthesias with the attack that got me my diagnosis. That's different than this though. With that, I would sit down on cold tile and it would feel like I just sat on a pit of lava. It was really weird. Thankfully that faded. You're right, this seems completely unrelated to the environment. It seems perceptual, but then I sweat, shiver, etc. Who knows? It is just so irritating because its impacting my sleep. I'll layer up, fall asleep, and wake up in sweat. Take the layers off, go back to sleep, and wake up shivering. There's just no winning since its just swing from hot to cold to hot, and sometimes both at once! I could deal with it fine if I could just sleep through it. Sigh... I have a long scheduled neuro appointment early next month. I'm definitely going to bring this up. Quote:

My husband is used to my "broken thermostat". I never turn up the heat or open/close windows without checking the thermometer first to see if it's real or just me. One day it can be 72 and I'm too warm. Another day it can be 72 and I'm wearing legwarmers and two sweatshirts.
I'm relieved that (so far) it's mostly annoying. It comes and goes.

Yes also, and it was never a problem before the MS hit. I was a truck driver - dock man and worked outside in building that didn't have much more than a roof to keep the freight and working surface dry.
Heat is definitely not a friend now and a chilled feeling at odd times and sweating profusely with no apparent reason also happens.

So I think we've covered 3 temperature issues.
1. paresthesia - cold feels hot and/or hot feels cold 2. uhthoff syndrome - heat intolerance 3. does it have a name? - fever like sweats/chills Are there any other MS temperature issues that you folks have experienced or heard of? I've had all 3 of those at some time or another, with just the uhthoff's being a permanent fixture (so far). |
