Has anyone else's neuro suggested a low sodium diet? In a way it's not bad, I think I've lost probably about five pounds this week, definitely an inch+ off the waist. But at the same time I think that's more starvation than cutting out sodium. It just seems like there's far too many things I can't eat and not enough that I can especially when I have to be super careful on my iron intake (hemochromatosis)
So many meats, nuts, veggies, grains and even a few fruits are already knocked off for high iron content, throw sodium into the mix and I guess it's steamed rice and grapes for me ![]() Or rather it's too busy screaming at me: "gimme BREAD! Gimme MILK!" (A bit of a shocker over how much sodium is in milk ![]() ![]() Any suggestions? Using Mrs. Dash and all that, but sincerely missing the milk and cookies before bedtime, and the hot buttered toast and tea in the mornings especially as things should be cooling down a bit here soon which normally kicks my appetite back into gear. Quitting smoking is soooo soooo much easier than giving up salt ![]() Not really craving the smokes, but was ready to huff the salt blocks at Ganders today. ![]() |

I can definitely relate to the salt...it is my favorite flavor! I quit smoking cold turkey 5 years ago and have not had a problem with that since...but, should give up salt all together (blood pressure alone tells me this) but I absolutely love the flavor of salt...I have to be gluten-free as it is and have so many food allergies...
I use Himalayan Pink Salt, it is purer than processed table salt, has about 1/4 less sodium than table salt per 1/4 tsp but it is not iodized and we know our thyroids need the iodide. Himalayan Pink Salt is much more expensive than table salt so I tend to alternate it with table salt for the benefit of less sodium in my diet. I wish you the best of luck with lowering the sodium in your diet, Mrs. Dash is an awesome method. Unfortunately, not an option for me due to my allergies. :-) |

I read the pink color of Himalayan salt is from iron oxide. This salt is from Pakistan and I find my self in disagreement with them on many issues. It is from rock type salt and does contain 10 minerals not found in table salt so perhaps that explains it's increased price. I do love to Google things!

True it's not a no sodium diet, just reducing to under 2g. But when you consider dry bread with nothing added to it is 95mg a slice, plain water is 9mg, it starts adding up quick.
8oz of whole milk has 120mg while skim milk goes up to 130-140 mg. Boneless skinless chicken breasts have sodium raw, eggs 65 mg a piece before cooking.... Honestly I don't thinks its possible to do a no sodium diet, it's everywhere! But at least salt isn't my favorite flavor, second favorite... But told hubby if the docs ever tell me no sugar, or low sugar....my tombstone will say: "A sweeter death there never was..." |

I loved salty foods but decided to cut out adding salt to anything and try buying foods with less sodium when I noticed how thirsty I got and how my ankles were swelling.
Like magic, since I did this, I'm not so thirsty any more, and the ankle swelling is better.

Sally, I have extremely low blood pressure and possibly something called POTS (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) so not everyone should be on a low salt diet.
![]() I do agree with agate that the ankle swelling is an unpleasant side effect, though. ![]()

It's kinda funny. Seems everyone experiences greater thirst and cuts the salt... I cut the salt and now there's not enough fluid in the world to slake my thirst. I would be more concerned about the excess thirst if not for the fact that I'm definitely only renting the water. If not for that, I'd be running to the doctor.
Well at least I know I'm hydrated ![]() Yesterday it was 105 ![]() I should check the 10 day forecast and see if I need to flee to OH or NH for a couple of weeks till this is over. |

Starznight,
According to the news this morning, we should start a cooling trend this weekend (I think, if I remember correctly). I am only leaving the house if I absolutely need to in the heat. Three years ago, I would have been at the beach and thought nothing of it, now I would rather take a nap to try to thwart the fatigue...lol... |
