I feel for you all! I take 600 mg of Neurontin before bed and sleep like a baby. It knocks me out. I get 8 to 9 hours of sleep at night and then a 1 1/2 to 2 hour nap during the day. In a flare, it is more sleep with 2 naps a day or a good 3 to 4 hour nap.

Don't discount hormones either. As we age and start nearing the change, insomnia is common. I have yet to fully experience that but occasionally the night before I start I have trouble falling asleep.

My Circadian Rhythm has changed over the years. In my youth, and during most of my life, I worked. I went to bed at 11 pm and up at 5 am. If I had to nap after work an hour so be it. I tried not too.

These last few years, I have had a reversal of sleep hours. I go to bed 2, 3 or 4 am and sleep 8 to 9 hours. Then I get up so late in the noon hours, which I don't care for. I love the mornings, but I just go with the flow of what my body wants/needs.

I have tried to change it. If I go to bed at 1 am, I wake up wide awake a 5 am. I read a while and go back at 7, 8 or 9 am and lose the whole day sleeping. I think my internal sleep clock is broken, along with my internal thermostat.

The Autonomic Nervous system controls these, like your heartbeat and breathing, etc. You don't have control over these either.

Only problem I have is if I have a doctor appointment or a blood draw that is early. I have to get up early and stay in a fog until I get back home. I don't function well on 2 hours.

I don't take any sleep meds, never have, and went off Neurontin years ago. On the LDN I have no problem sleeping, just my normal wrong hours IMO.

Nothing bad has changed, at least I get enough hours. Maybe someday it will change back.

I started getting insomnia in the mid 1990s. About the same time that my uncle died. (late fall 1995) Which is about the time that I had mononucleosis.

Sometimes I can go months without a problem, and sometimes I can go for months WITH A PROBLEM. I got tired of that yesterday, and made an appointment with my regular doctor about it. I've already stayed up two or three hours past the bedtime that he said I should keep. I'm about to go to bed in a couple of minutes tho.

Hopefully all the exercise that I did today (because the doctor told me to start doing that) has made me tired enough that I'll sleep. If not, the baclofen that I'm about to take should help with that. (not sleeping tonight without a baclofen to catch the muscle spasms I'm sure that I'll be having in a few hours.)

I used to take Neurontin but it made me gain so much weight. I might have to start taking it again, though, because I can't (apparently) take Baclofen due to shortness of breath when I take it. Neurontin helped me sleep, too.

I didn't have the weight gain with Neurontin. I guess I am lucky. It has been a lifesaver for me as far as nerve pain and even spasticity that I think I would just deal with the weight gain. For me, weight gain vs. no nerve pain is a no brainer.

Balcofen made me sleep too but I didn't have the shortness of breath.

I'm still searching for a way to get a good night's sleep. None of the meds I've tried have helped, except Melatonin, which apparently isn't good for MS patients. I have periods of insomnia and periods of major fatigue, but it's usually insomnia. I have to wake up at 5:00 for work, and the longer I lay there the harder it is to fall asleep. I started Neurontin a month ago, and I was SO hoping it would help me sleep, but it hasn't yet.

I agree with Cherie--I have to go to bed with a full stomach. That really helps me fall asleep.

Lady -- I'm sorry you have the weird sleeping schedule, but it's good to learn that somebody else has the same situation as me! All of the "normals" find it so strange and funny that I sleep better in the daytime for some reason. Like you, I wish I could sleep at night and be awake to enjoy the daylight, but my body just won't cooperate.

Yes, those morning appointments are horrible!! It's good to know we're not alone!

I didn't sleep much last night. Went to bed at about 9 PM. Got up at 11 PM. Back to sleep for a while but up again at 1 AM and up till about 3 AM. Up again at 5:30 AM and still up. I'll go back to bed around 8 AM and hopefully (if I remember to turn off the phone ringers and cell phone) will sleep until around 11 AM. Maybe. I might be up all day. For some reason it seems I don't need ANY sleep at all anymore!!

I'm just thankful I can nap whenever I need to.

For the last few weeks I've had the same issues as you, Kitty... I can't seem to sleep when I'm in the midst of a spell of fatigue, but then I get this second wind of energy just around the time when I "need" to sleep. Unfortunately because I have two young kids at home and set work hours I can't sleep when I want to. I found a half tab of Unisom in my cabinet yesterday from my days of pregnancy nausea and took it, that was great. I wonder if LDN will help with my sleep issues or just keep me awake if I get up during the endorphin rush period?

for the past six years I have not been able to sleep more than three hours at a time. I never really thought about it but I guess it could be my MS. molly
