My ankles swell. Usually, it's one swollen ankle at a time, rarely are both swollen. I was told that perhaps it would be related to a vein of some sort, and I was told it was possibly due to sodium intake.

Well, I reduced my sodium intake, and it does not really matter. I'm not overweight, so I was wondering whether it is a little known symptom of MG.

Let me first say I was tested and cleared for peripheral artery or vein disease before being treated for lymphedema. Then two years later....

When dx'd with MG, neuro had noted my lymphedema history (legs) and swollen hands. Said the Mestinon would help. Expained the lymph system is supported by muscles. Weak muscles can't properly support lymphatics which can then allow lymph to build up.

I have not heard or read much about this. Can only tell you, my hands and legs slowly reduced until they were normal after six months or so of Mestinon. No more salt free diet necessary now....Yippee!

Any one else heard of a lymphedema connection with MG?

Sue gave you some very good info. I have a similar problem with sodium, lymphs, etc. but my background of having diabetes insipidus (lack of antidiuretic hormone) and being given too many fluids while on the drug for that started my problems (capillary permeability). I have generalized edema due to that, though not super bad.

Ankle swelling is NOT normal. The doctors who start the process of evaluating that are cardiologists. I highly suggest you see one as soon as possible. In fact, due to the high prevalence of people who have autoimmune diseases and also have the clotting disorder APS (antiphospholipid syndrome), I suggest you see your primary pronto so they can rule out a clot/DVT.

It is most definitely NOT a little known symptom of MG. When it is localized like that, the cause is more than likely circulatory in nature. PLEASE seek out help right away.

What is DVT?

deep vein thrombosis - - a blood clot. Though the clot is usually in the calf (sometimes thigh) - the swelling is evidenced lower on the leg because of the poor venous return past the clot.

All I know is that I've had this symptom for at least five years. I go to the MG organization this Friday. I'll mention it to the doctor.

Poetist, A neurologist is not a cardiologist, which is the kind of doctor you should be seeing. Simply because it's been around for five years does not mean there isn't a significant problem, especially since it has changed lately.

Please get help from a cardiologist.
