Default Stupid question

First, I just want to thank you all for helping me this past week. I have had MG for 13 years but has been in remission for the last 12! So I was 19 when I was diagnosed. As a kid at that age, I didn't realize the maginitude of MG. I am now just starting to realize it. Now on to my question.

Anyone out here surf? Can it still be done? How will cold water with a wetsuit on affect MG?

Not a stupid question at all dude. Everyones MG is different, so I can't say YES. But I would assume, yes. I run, I lift weights, I ski. The cold seems to do less harm than that of heat. So, be careful when do you do it- just don't over do it, but if your symptoms get worse stop for a while. I know it sucks, (I'm 18) but just listen to your body.

Good luck, hope you can get out on the waves

Thumbs up just go for it when you can

Hey Dave i say if you can then go do it, even if its just a short surf or if its a day you wanted to surf , went to the beach got out the surf board put on that wetsuit got tired out from it lol, then thought no not today then just sit on the beach and breath in the beautiful ocean smell, another day will be here and a good wave

Dave, I dont surf but I sure know that if I could handle it I would cold shower everyday in the summer because cold makes me better. I know others are like this but this is not true of all I have heard. When I got worse in the summer of 09 I called the university where most of my treatment has been. The on-call neuro told me to take a cold shower when I told him my weakness had worsened a lot and was affecting my breathing too.

From reading I have done it is recommended to not do EMGs on cold muscles as it can read wrong. Warm is the best, more likely to show the results.

The wet suit gave me pause to think that one would get warm in it. Boy I dont even let a warm shower hit my trunk for any length of time. Too risky as I hotter than normal shower precipitated my first MG crisis.

I am curious. Is there anything that precipitated your remission? I got so much better that first winter I wondered if that was happening to me tho didnt want to really believe it so I wouldnt hope too much. Now I just know I will be better every winter and worse in the summer and worse as the hot weeks go by.

this might just be a personal response to mg but when i get into water like a pool or something like above my head and my breathing is being controlled by being underwater and such i have real bad exacerbations of the mg.i know that i personally wouldnt be able to surf even if i knew how, which i wish i did. i wish i lived somewhere i could surf. but anyways thats just me i dont know if other people get the same reaction to water

Wow I had no idea that cold water was helpful. There is so much I never knew about MG since it was in remission for so long. A lot of the info I am finding out kind of freaks me out but it sounds like it can be dealt with...sort of. My MG was brought on because I got really sick in December (flu and strept throat) I also ran a marathon around the same time and that is when it came out of remission. Clearly the heat from running was not beneficial. However, I have been working out and running 3-5 miles a day for the past 12 years and never had any ill effects. Makes me feel like it is all my fault that it came on. However I dont regret doing the long run, made my best time!
