I had IVIG about 6 months ago. The first day was given in ambulatory care center of a hospital and the remaining 4 days were at home, administered by a nurse. The first day of my treatment cost $8500, and the remaining 4 days at home cost about $8500 total. It definitely was a cost savings to do most of the treatment at home. If I need it another time, I'll either have it done at an infusion center or at home. Or I may request the subcutaneous form of gammaglobulin since the home care company said that I could be taught to give it myself.

The cost of the ivig is based on the size of the person and the dosage the doc orders. I was on .4 grams of ivig per kilogram of weight weekly and the cost was about $10,000/treatment. My ins negotiated a deal and actually paid $3,400 of the total cost per treatment. However, my doc changed my dosage to 1.0 grams per kilogram of weight biweekly about 2 months ago and I haven't seen the bill or payments for that yet. Obviously, it will be higher because the cost is almost all in the cost of the medication. Just think, it takes about 1,000 blood donations to manufacture 1 dose! Expensive!

Don't forget about Hizentra.
http://www.hizentra.com/ It's subcutaneous and you do it at home. A nurse trains you. I don't know what the cost comparison is. Annie |
