Default Bad Dental experience.

Besides having MG i also have RA and take methotrexate, folic acid and prednisone. Went to have a filling in lower side tooth, told the Dentist, only carbocaine no EPI...and he said fine. The first couple injections, didn't hurt to bad but then , It felt like he was giving the next two in my cheek the pain was excruciating. But here is the worst part. He finished Filling my tooth, and as time went on I was getting more and more numb, all my bottom gums, and teeth and my top gums and teeth, tongue, lips jaws, it took about4 hours to wear off., I was nauseated, and I was trying not to panic, as I could hardly swallow, it was terrible, I never had this happen before.I have to get another tooth filled I am so afraid.

Discuss this with dentist - - sounds like he did a full block. The extreme pain was from injecting too fast....it really. really hurts!!

My dentist will use locals as much as possible rather than the blocks for me. More injections, but it just effects the one tooth they're working on. Depending on the depth of the cavity, there can still be some pain. And locals won't cut it for a big job.

I'm quite scared of dentistry and seek out docs who are willing to tell me what they're doing and how stuff works...so I'm only repeating here what I have been told.

Have a chat with the man before your next tooth fill. Good Luck.

I'm really sorry you had that experience!

When doctors give a "caine" drug without the epinephrine in it, they often inject way more than they should. Those drugs are not as effective for reducing pain.

The epi keeps the drug working longer.

In the long run, it might be better to have something like Xylocaine, which might be better tolerated. I do just fine on that one, but everyone is different.

If you want the nerves to recover more quickly, try drinking something with caffeine in it and taking some methylcobalamin (recovers the peripheral nerves more quickly).

I hope you won't have that experience again!
