Default Hello everyone. I'm new too

I'm hoping I can get some relief. Since the early 90's the pain has been getting worse and worse in my feet. I have been to numerous doctors over the years and none could diagnose it. I have had bad back and neck issues also. I have had mri's and yes I have bulging disks. I wake up a lot of times at night and I can't feel or move my arms. The pain in my feet has gotten so bad I can't sleep. I can't even stand to have them under the blankets. I finally found the word for it online a couple of months ago. It's called peripheral neuropathy. Doctors keep quitting here. I don't know why. I just met this one and she diagnosed it. I don't have diabetes though it runs in my family. She prescribed Neutontin. I have been taking it for over two months. I have too many side effects. Constant chills, stumbling and mental confusion and lack of appetite. The pain lessened somewhat but it's not worth it. I get terrible cramps in my legs and feet that make me jump out of bed and I can't even walk it off. I don't even want to walk anymore because it hurts so much. Right now I'm sitting here and the pain is almost too much. I absolutely refuse to take any kind of pain med because I don't want to be addicted. And over the counter stuff doesn't help. But I'm getting desperate. I can't take this pain anymore. I'm hoping I can get some suggestions. I can't afford to have my mind confused with this Neuornton because I have been taking care of my boyfriend who suffered a severe brain injury in 2003. And I have my two lovable kitties that I love dearly. I don't want to give up but this pain is getting to be too much. There has to be some relief.
Thanks for listening.

Welcome to NeuroTalk, Cyn!!!

Sorry for your pain.

Side effects are the pits, aren't they? But then, so is pain. What makes you think you'll get addicted if you take Rx drugs? Sounds to me like you need them.

I hope you find helpful info here. Someone will be along shortly to give you links to some threads and forums.

Again, a big Welcome!!!

Your symptoms sound too familliar. What other things have you been checked for? I hope at least thyroid has been checked. Do you mind if I ask your age? I had the chills, stumbling and lack of appetite- and in spite of walking daily, kept putting on weight. Most of it, it turned out was water weight. I couldn't wear my wedding ring for a few years and had to get a replacement that fit which now slips right off.
I just responded to your message in the thread I started, "New member- peripheral neuropathy, B12 question".
You have had this for a long time. I'm sorry for you and hope you will get some help soon. it sounds like you have a lot to deal with, but I would think again about taking appropriate pain meds if you really need them and you are under a Doctor's care. In my case, I want to find the cause and solve it, not just treat and mask symptoms, and yet there may not always be a cure if it is autoimmune. Hopefully we can just prevent further deterioration. I look forward to hearing more from you.

Yes I have had my thyroid tested a couple of times over the years. My sister has Graves Disease. Diabetes runs in the family but every time I get tested I'm fine. I have had so many blood tests and they come back negative. Except for one. I was tested last year for heavy metals. My iron count was pretty high. My doctor said I had only one gene for hemochromatosis so I was lucky. I asked her if it could be that I cook every day in my cast iron pans and she said no. I was also tested 3 times over the years for Hep-C and other blood diseases, all negative. I just had more blood tests and my iron count is normal. ??????????

I don't want to take pain meds because they make me sick for one thing but I had a brother and sister who both died young from drugs and alcohol. And when I was younger a lot of my friends were addicted to drugs. They kept trying to get me to do it but I said no for fear of being like them. Most of them are dead now. This pain all started after I had been working for about a year for a taxi company. I worked there for 5 years. The office was in a very old factory building and there was a big oily pool of water not far from the door. Years later I read that it was a toxic waste dump. There was a major to do about it. Everyone was ordered to move out and it had to be cleaned up. A lot of the cab drivers have already died of cancer. A couple were good friends of mine. That scares me too. So I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it. Another thing I want to look into is my sensativity to electricity. There have been times when I have gotten up and unplugged the fridge and anything else that hummed. I can't even go into a store with fluorescent lights because it makes me very dizzy. And panic attacks.

I would come to the PN forum and ask Marlene... her husband has hemochromatosis. She knows alot about it.

I personally wouldn't use cast iron if my iron blood work was high.
