I decided to join this group b/c almost ten years ago I purposefully hurt myself and caused neurological problems for myself. Actually to be more specific, I gave myself a concussion.... I was young and I honestly didn't think it would hurt me. When I started experiencing neurological burning, stinging, etc., I tried to tell my doctor about it but I really had no idea what words to use to describe it.... but when I told her "I feel something moving inside of me", she didn't beleive me...
so I waited two years before I mentioned it to a different doctor...and was recommended to a neurologist. Anyway, long story short, my neurologist tells me there's no nerve damage.... but yet I can't feel my right leg or arm well enough to feel my reflexes or my muscles in my upper leg and upper arm. Is there anything I can do to help my nervous system at all? |

Welcome to Neurotalks. Mind if I ask why you would give yourself a concussion on purpose? Were you experimenting and wanted to see what would happen if you banged your head? Just curious. You don't have to answer if you don't want to. All the best, Mel

I was 19 at the time and I wanted to see what it felt like to do something impulsive for once. I was always one of those responsible kids that got good grades and didn't curse or smoke or anything.
But also I didn't realize at the time that I had horrible social anxiety....and no matter what situation I was in, I couldn't make myself communicate or have fun being around people. So I guess I just lost it for once. |

I was wondering if you have ever heard of RDS? That is something you might want to ask your Dr. about. And I know that when my migraines are really bad, and I have to go into the hospital my right leg and my right side of my face goes numb. My Dr. said that was a side effect from my migraines. I am on NT because I am suffering from Post Concussion Syndrome.

No, I've never heard of RDS.
I'm not experiencing numbness. I'm experiencing a lot of loss of feeling/lessened sensations. I can't even feel my lips anymore or when I'm chewing food in my mouth... or if a hair gets pulled from my head, I can't feel it. I also can barely feel itching or reflexes. |

Welcome,
Good you found this community of caring people. So sorry you're suffering with a self-induced head injury. I guess we all have self-induced something bad in our life, so don't beat up on yourself too much. You're having it hard enough. I hope you find your way around the board. There's lots of postconcussion syndrome folks here that will offer you their experiences and try to help you with your struggles. They do understand how it is. Here's a link to our post concussion syndrome : http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forum92.html Take your time and jump in where you're comfortable.

Second, I'd forget about why you did what you did (for the moment at least) & start asking what's wrong with these docs? IMHO, you need to focus there--not on self-fixes for problem nerves. Quote:

But take in what the others have to say. I'm especially interested to hear what you learn over at the post-concussion forum. You deserve a much better "third try" on this. ![]() |
