Hello! I am a 45 yo female and I have had peripheral neuropathy for four years ( peroneal nerve). Stumped many docs all this time and got sick of disappointments of trying to find a cause. Recently read that it could be gluten so I am trying gf to see if it helps but also find that sugar intensifies the pain. Does anyone have experience with this? Should I be as strict about other carbs for the sugar effect while I am trying the gf? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Welcome to NeuroTalk:
Yes, sugar... the devil! We at the Peripheral Neuropathy forum discuss this often. Avoiding sugar as much as possible is a good idea for those with nerve pain. It is called impaired glucose tolerance. There is a supplement that may help. It is called R-lipoic acid stabilized, (a new improved form of alpha lipoic acid). It can help with glucose utilization. Also benfotiamine can help --this is a form of thiamine B1. Thiamine is involved with carbohydrate metabolism. This is our Supplement thread at PN: http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread121683.html Insulin resistance is another term for impaired glucose utilization. It is a form of pre-diabetes, which may or may not progress to full blown diabetes in the future. That depends on the genetic make up of the person. At this stage it involves some pretty low blood sugars in response to the sugar consumed (also starchy carbs), and these lows really impact the nerves and their ability to generate energy from the mitochondria in their cells. And yes gluten can be a culprit. Here is a link to that: https://sites.google.com/site/jccglu...eralneuropathy Quote:
