I was doing a Google search for how to make powdered sugar without corn starch, and landed here. My granddaughter will soon be two years old. She has suffered with eczema and other allergic reactions since she was only a couple of months old. She was recently allergy skin tested and showed reactions to corn, rice, oats, and soy. I found out through another website that cornstarch is in powdered sugar. Many cake recipes call for shortening, which has soy. If anyone has suggestions for making a birthday cake free of any corn, soy, rice or oat product, please feel free to email me. I need help quick. Her birthday is coming up on April 29th.
Thanks, EmilysMawMaw |

Welcome!
Your granddaughter sounds EXACTLY like my daughter was. They told me initially that she had infant acne, then eczema(sp?) then we found out what it actually was. It was/is a whole body (almost) skin condition called (something) polaris. It's basically extreme dry skin accompanied by allergies. The skin area gets really red with bumps, etc. That's why they thought it was eczema. However, it was/is widespread and not patches. There's nothing that can be done for my daughter's condition except to watch the perfumed things for allergies and to moisturize. They said it's usually hereditary and asked me about my skin when younger. Sure enough, I had the same thing but in a milder form, and sure enough...I did outgrow it in my late 30's. My daughter just had bumps all over face with really red cheeks, on her upper arms and some on upper torso and upper legs. It was also indicative of the many environmental and other allergies she had/has as they go hand in hand. My daughter's condition first appeared at about 5-6 weeks. There was no way to manage all her allergies and she had to have a sinus endoscopy at 9 years old! I wish you well and hope you keep us posted. Good luck! KD

My daughter's skin condition is keratosis pilaris & keratosis pilaris rubra faceii (when it's on the face). There's a good site here with info to check and see if this is what your granddaughter might be experiencing: http://www.keratosispilaris.org/
Take care. KD

Friend, it's sad to hear about your granddaughter. The most effective treatment for allergies is to avoid what is causing the symptoms. If this is not possible, then medication selection should be based on the symptoms the individual is experiencing.

Thanks, curious. We do have MUCH in common.
I think that is a really good and informative site. KP is so often misdiagnosed and parents use meds, etc., on and off that don't help. It's frustrating for the parents and the children. Plus, kids are using meds that they don't need. ![]() They even gave daughter special washes and a prescription moisterizer with no improvement (the dermo said it probably wouldn't but was worth a try). One thing I've found is that, like other skin disorders, it is better in summer and moisterizing regularly can help a bit in winter. Love, KD
