Well to start off I am 22, in the NAVY, and I am happily married, with no kids YET, but trying! I live in virginia, about 6 miles from the beach, here is the kicker I can not enjoy it anymore! I accidently shot myself in the leg while chanbering the rounds in my weapon! I now have a very large hole in my leg and if you can imagine that, then you can imagine just how much pain I am in! I have tibial nerve damage, tibial artery damage, and as I am sure you can guess some very serious muscle damage! All of which is in my lower leg just below the knee! the doc's keep telling me that the pain is comming from my sympathetic nervous system now of course this was like speaking greek to me so I asked him when he told me that I asked him what that was he explained it but when I got to looking it up he explained it all wrong! I have spots of my leg that I can not feel at all and I have parts that I can feel and then I have parts that if they are even touched with the slightest of touches it hurts like $$$$ right now I am awaiting surgery to get my tibial nerve worked on they are going to try graph it back together with a nerve from my other leg! which is going to painful but they think it will help me! we will see about that! but I am on here to learn as much as I can about Nerves, Arteries, and muscle tissue the do's and don'ts so to speak about how to help my mending process! if anyone has any ideas or had or who have and issue similar to mine and you are treating it please let me know your plan of attack! I am wanting to make the military a career but it is not loking good for relistment next year if I dont not get this fixed! But I would like to thank all of those who at least read this and all of those that reply as well!

So sorry for your accident C B. That really sucks. I know what you're talking about. It's called parasthesia. it's numb but it hurts like nobody's business when touched. I have had that twice in my life but not from gunshot. Once was a neck injury that made my entire left arm that way. Even a tiny breeze across the skin hurt. I was in agony BUT it did heal. Took a while, a couple years I think but in the meantime my arm felt So tired ALL the time and was useless. The other time was a cheek fracture. I fell in the bathtub and smashed my face. I SAW stars. It was horrible. My whole side of face was numb and still feel effects of that now and it's been almost 20 years since that happened but the numbnes has almost totally gone away. . BUT the pain does subside in time.
Nerve pain is really tough to alleviate. I got NO help whatsoever from doctors. I had to just try to make myself comfortable and try not to aggravate the situation while I was healing. Sometimes I'd used a topical rub like Bengay and massage to stop the muscle pain, yes, even on my face and it did help a little. Muscle spasms Really hurt when the nerve is trying to heal and they happen alot. The muscle around the nerve spasms to protect the nerve. Sometimes heat, either moist or dry, you have to see what works at the time. I'm not the kind of person who runs to the doc for every little thing so I experimented alot to try to help myself. And I took a lot of Tylenol or Excedrin. |

Hi CTT3 and Welcome to NT. Sorry about your accident, but you do have a good attitude. Thank you.. *that's for being in the military and serving your country.
My Dad was a Navy WWII vet. His ship was sunk while he was on it, but he was one of the lucky ones. Hope you can get a handle on your leg problems and that your career dream can come true. I also had a brother 20 yrs/Army, a brother 23 yrs Marines, a brother/just one stint in Army and my Dad's brother 30 yrs AF. So, I do have a soft spot for our military. Glad to have you w/us and hope you can find some answers/info to help you. take care. ![]()

Hi Bailey, welcome to NT. I am sorry to hear about your accident, I sure hope the surgery gets you back on track. I was a Navy wife for 13 years. I can sympathize with you, and your possible career end. I know it doesn't matter if you have a desk job, they still won't reenlist you unless you can pass the physicals. (My husband ended up getting a hardship discharge due to my health.) Best of luck, and keep us posted on how your recovery is going.
