Treatment Algorithms

May 2010 Treatment Algorithms in Parkinson's Disease

Report Authors
Sami R. Fam, Ph.D.

  • Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the most common chronic neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly. Because PD is a progressive disease, the range and severity of symptoms in PD patients vary greatly during the course of the disease, as do complications inherently associated with some of the therapies used to treat PD symptoms. Therefore, treatment goals change as PD patients progress from one stage of the disease to the next, resulting in a high rate of polypharmacy that is unique among neurological disorders

Default did I miss something?

I read this....just seems like they are trying to maximize what they've already got. I guess if this translates into a few patients having a doctor who has a better clue about PD, then good. It just seems a bit of a waste of time and energy which could be better spent on finding the cause(s) and/or cure, IMHO. Kinda like when governments spend a ton of money on a "study" for a "consultant" to tell us all something we already knew.

This make perfect sense. There are millions of dollars being spent on PD research so they have to have double and triple the money on studies and consultants to tell us all something we already know.

God forbid they actually find a new treatment or even a cure!

Default exactly

This is their bread and butter, it's their job. They have numbers in their head, not pictures of people suffering. I'm not sure what ever can be done to "create" compassion and devote the manpower and dollars in the most urgent way. They are very curious about how and why we fall apart, but can't put us back together again and never will with the meds we have now.
