Default Weekly Check-In May 20-26, 2007

Hi Everyone..Its been a long week..It has rained 4 days out of 7, and my foot has been aching all week..I went to the ER on Sunday and got a tetanus shot, x-rayed, and anti-biotics..I couldnt get the Rx on Sunday and the hospital said if I came back on Monday that the social worker would stamp the Rx and I could get it for free..I saved about $55.00, but what I had to go through to get it was hardly worth the effort..First of all I had to drive to the city..(Providence)..Then the parking garage at the hospital was full, so I had to park in the garage further away, and the walk from the closest garage was long enough as it was..I limped a loooooong, looooooog way..and when I got there I had to wait for the social worker, which wasnt long, and then I had to limp down to the phamacy, which was far enough away to have me cursing to myself at every painful step..When I got there I had to wait 45 minutes for them to put up the Rx..Thank God there was a place to sit down!..Then the long walk back to the truck, and of course I took a detour down the wrong corridor, cuz they all look the same..I had, had just about enough at that point..It sure was nice to reach my truck finally, and get on the highway heading toward home..Like having pd isnt enough trouble....So Ive spent the week hanging around the house mostly and eating and watching TV..and soaking my foot in epsom salts..Its healing very slow, and there are no signs of infection...so far

I was asked to manage a new local blues band..Why they asked me, I dont know?..Maybe they figure Ive got the time to research and book gigs..I listened to the rehearse without their drummer this afternoon..I think they need alot more rehearsing before they think about playing gigs..but they want to play out..I'll give it my best shot I suppose..Ive got nothing to lose but my time..which I dont have as much of as they may think..And I thought my life was going to wind way down after my dx.. ..That hasnt been the case..I got rid of the big boat, and my life filled up with other things

Other than that..it appears that somehow or other I got voted in as the new facillitator of one of the 2 support groups that I belong to..I got an e-mail from one of the members the other day about me finding a speaker for the June meeting..So that means I am officially unofficially it.. ..I blame you folks for this!.. ...........You taught me too much!!..

Default shoulder pain

I had high hopes for my laproscopic shoulder surgery, but the pain is worse. My rotator cuff was fine but I had loose cartilage in the joint inself and bone spurs.
I guess I'll have to "play with pain" and see if PT will help it at all.

Steve, if we him up he will just come back...

Charlie, sorry to hear you are in so much pain. Hopefully your surgery will provide you great relief.

My oldest daughter and her husband finally sold there home. Now to prepare for the move to the bigger home... We are all looking forward to the new "old" home; circa 1900. Yesterday they sorted through the catch-all garage...ugh. Today they sorted through the even bigger catch-all basement. So, the bulk of sorting is over and done. On to the chaos of boxes everywhere. As they were sorting through the basement my 9 yrs old granddaughter (the oldest) got so upset. She feared that because mom and dad were getting rid of so many toys (infant and toddler toys) that they would get rid of the precious two dozen stuffed animals that she keeps on her bed. Goodness, listening to the fears of children!

This coming week is my CERE-120 evaluation week to see if I qualify to become a participant. Two longs days in Philadelphia.

Default I've been Naughty

Hi Folks,

My son ,Fred, and his fiancee, Karen, are getting married on July 24 then the following week moving to Texas where they will probably settle down as Karen was raised in Texas. Karen is having problems with her mother while she plans her wedding. Her mother gets overenthiastic and wants to be in on the planning. She is horrified that they are not having a church wedding and tried to get my support by requesting I call and ask to do a reading from the bible with her. I said no, it was their wedding and we should not interfere.

A few days later I came up with the stupid idea that the mothers could hold a wedding shower as Karen was using her younger brother as best man. Karen's mother loved the idea, but when I broached the subject to Karen, she nixed it. I called my son Fred today, and tried to explain that the mothers wanted to help in some way, but he said he didn't have time (he just let me know the date last week) and they wanted complete control of everything, and that was why they were paying their own expenses.

Now I am reluctant to even talk to my son. He must be loyal to his new bride who grows more like his mother every day. Karen's father leaves the room whenever Karen comes over because he can't stand the arguing between his wife and daughter and will not take sides.

Here I am ratteling on about a non-problem and poor Charlie is about to undergo shoulder surgery and Steve is nursing a recovery from a rusty nail in his foot.

Charlie, do you have frozen shoulder? I understand that they put you to sleep and manipulate your shoulder to break up the bone spurs and other calcium deposits. You will still have a long haul of physical therapy to keep it from freezing up again. Good luck.

Steve, sorry you can't get out to fish. Maybe we should all buy angler magzines and fill your mailbox with them. If you ever get to the Midwest, Minnesota, land of 10,ooo lakes, you might want to try to catch some trout and Muskie. Have you heard about the disease that is making its way to Minnesota? The infected fish are covered with large red sores. I have every confidence you will breeze through your speech. You have a great sense of humor, speaking of which, call me a dumb brunette, whose head did you place on Data's body?

Default weekly check in

Congratulations, Lloyd. I have a dear friend who assures me that being a grandparent is the only thing in life that is not overrated.

Default Back again,

Hi All,
Back again from holiday in Crete, a Greek island in the Med. Got quite
a good tan, and had a great time. I did not have any help at the airports, and actually was able to swim again in the pool which belonged to the villa that we rented. I thought I had had my last swim when we were in Tahiti in March. My arms are very weak from my dislocated shoulder due to a fall some time back. The roads are dreadful, very narrow and sheer precipices on one side in the mountainous region we were in.
In a restaurant, there was an elderly man who clearly had PD, which was confirmed by a chat with the waitress. He was a relative of the restaurant owner, and towards the end of the evening, she tried to get him up and go upstairs to bed. He stood up and imediately froze, and nothing could persuade him to move. However, I was amazed to see the lady owner stand directly in front of him, and grip his hands with hers. Then she walked backwards, and he followed without any problems, walking in step ,with her.
Now back to work, I had 2,550 spam e-mails to deal with, and over 200 normal ones. First day back today, I had to cut the grass in the rear of the house, which is half an acre and very overgrown.
Interested in the thread where someone asked for Daffy Duck's CV. He said he would post his if everyone else did. That would be a good idea, I would be happy to publish mine.
Too many interesting threads to comment on until I have time, will post an article which says, "The BBB was thought to be intact in neurodegenerative illnesses such as AD & PD, ......... but recent evidence argues otherwise."
On the thread on stress, we should bear in mind that it causes the BBB to be more permeable, allowing toxins which normally circulate harmlessly in the blood stream to enter the brain. Remember the story about the Israeli army who were given drugs which do not normally pass the BBB. The stress of battle caused them to have neurological damage due to an opening of the BBB.
Rick mentions alpha lipoic acid as one of his favourite supplements.
This is one of a group of compounds which tighten down the pores of the BBB, making the membrane more like that of a normal person who does not suffer PD symptons.

Things are pretty calm and quiet right now, which part of me likes, but the other part of me is missing the chaos that used to be my life! So mixed feelings on that...

Booked our flight for the YOPN in Chicago, so am really looking forward to it. Can't wait to see old friends, meet people I've only spoken to via email or online, and make new friends. This is my favorite PD event.

I've attached a photo from the Unity Walk. From left to right is Mike Richter, former New York Rangers goalie and future Hall of Famer, Michael J. Fox, and Davis Phinney. Good guys all supporting a good cause. Being a hockey guy, it was great to meet Mike Richter. What a class act and so awesome that he came out to support Davis and the rest of us at the Unity Walk. Very cool...
