Hi everyone, I have a copy of my test results for the gliadin antibodies. Deamindated gliadin abs, Iga is 1, 0-19 is negative. Deamindated gliadin abs, IgG is 2, 0-19 is negative. What does this mean other than a negative test? Is this a good test for gluten neuropathy?

While it's certainly good to have negative results, JCC's the Gluten File has indicated that there may be as many as 20% of biopsy-proven celiacs who don't have positive serological indications of gluten antibody activity.

This particular area of medicine is in a state of flux, as gluten problems have gotten more attention and there are many attempts going on to develop more accurate gluten serological tests. (There's also a lot of research ongoing into trying to block the gluten peptides from being noticed by the bodies of sensitive people.) The anti-gliadin IgG, in particular, is a very sensitive measure, but not very specific. The anti-gliadin IgA is a bit more specific, but not quite as sensitive. The anti-transglutaminase IgA is the most specific for correlation to intestinal damage, but not as sensitive. And the IgA tests may be skewed by total IgA concentrations, which vary fairly widely (and some people have genetically low levels of IgA to begin with, making those IgA measures rather inaccurate, even in the gluten sensitive).

Dr. Hadijvassiliou has published extensive research indicating that those with isolated elevated IgG anti-gliadin titres often have non-gastric gluten sensitivity--they may not be celiac, or have any gastrointestinal symptoms--but may present with neurological ones. He further indicates that such people may have a different human-leukocyte profile than the average person with frank celiac.
