Health dangers of chlorine:

If you want to explore the role of "fibrosis" in your problem, it would probably be more successful to consult a surgeon or urologist who does sex change surgeries. These must create alot of scar tissue, and fibrosis (esp. in people with the tendency to form fibrotic scar tissue, as mentioned in the one Mayo link I gave).

I would not expect many doctors know about pentoxifylline's potential, as it is thought to be an older drug to improve circulation and has fallen out of favor with current Plavix in the mix.

Wow Mrs D you have really taken me back a bit,I studied this drug 25yrs ago during my university days, I worked in a cancer research lab and we were looking at Pentoxyfilline as an anti metastatic agent- it didn't decrease the tumours as we were hoping but stimulated their growth instead. Thanks for the trip down memory lane

I had to stop swimming as my nerves really reacted to chlorine, I felt as though the nerves were switched on and stayed on, the pain was excruciating.
I swam 2-3 times a week before but in the end had to keep getting out the pool and washing my feet in cold water, it got that it just wasn't worth the excercise.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Do you think the chlorine could impede nerve repair?

I don't think anyone knows the answer to that question, John.

However, I would think the effects of chlorine would be more global and not localized.

I would think healing may be complicated by fibrotic changes in the tissue where the injury occurred. That Mayo site I gave you describes genetic tendencies to form more scar/fibrosis in response to injury in some men in the genital area.

Default There are, however--

--people with sensitive skin, for any number of reasons, who report that chlorinated polls, or overuse of chlorine bleach in their laundry, results in an irritation or burning sensation in the skin--almost as if the skin itself is being "bleached".

Certainly, swimmers who spend a lot of time in the pool have been advised to use skin emollients and lotions liberally.

Hey guys,

I did a pull up the other day, felt something get strained, and the numbness got about 30% worse bringing me to around 70-80% now.. It feels as if whatever nerve got damaged it is very prone to getting worse..

Whatever kind of cardio I do seems to exasterbate things a little, even doing things that dont put much pressure or use on the lower extremeties like swimming or a rowing machine. I thought I would be ok with these but it *appears* to make things worse.

I absolutely need my exercise to help with the depression in all this but at the same time I want to give my nerves the BEST possible environment for healing.

Feeling in a lot of turmoil about this. How should I go about exercising.. Should I give up swimming/rowing? Uhg, any insight very appreciated..

Cardio increases blood flow typically.

When blood flows into an area that has been deprived, there are sensations felt.

If you have a circulatory problem, like hardening of the arteries, you need to get that evaluated. I'd start with the legs...PAD shows up there when other places start to clog up.

Well, im only 28 YO and have had no circulatory problems. Have had stress tests and everything. Echos, etc. It just feels like the lower leg/pelvic movement is irritating an unhealed ligament/nerve.

So Im stuck between a rock and a hard place because I really thrive on my morning jogs or evening swims. I just want to have peace of mind knowing that Im not making my nerve situation worse.
