I don't take synthroid, I take natural thyroid and the ALA has been great along with Benfortiamine, Carniclear, CoQ10 etc. SO much improvement.

I have been taking the alpha lipoic acid (600 mg) since March but just switched to the r-lipoic acid. Should it have worked by now if it is going to?

What are those other supplements: Benfortiamine, Carniclear?

My initial bout with PN was over 30 yrs ago, and turned out to be from hypothyroidism. That was fixed finally, and my feet woke up and my hands were better (avoided carpal tunnel surgery), but then the insulin resistance came along.

I also have some food triggers... nightshade veggies. Potatoes are the worst but some tomato products will also do it. Burning... burning feet and lower legs. I use Biofreeze for that when it hits, but so far it is less if I behave myself with food choices.

My PN therefore is multifactorial, but for the most part under control. I use R-lipoic acid, benfotiamine, acetyl carnitine (not every day) Vit c 500mg, OptiZinc because of my lisinopril depletes it. I use Suntheanine at night, melatonin, either Zyrtec or Benadryl (I rotate these), MegaRed Krill oil, kelp extract, 5mg of methyl B12 twice a week, and 100mg of Ubinquinol (new) daily. Sometimes I take a multivit if I am not eating well.
Occasionally I take a l-tryptophan for sleep but not every night.
I also use magnesium lotion each night. I think I got it all...

We've done supplements in this house for over a decade. It has been amazing. Got my son off Ritalin, reversed my GERD and asthma, improved hubby's ADD. Lot of other benefits.
mRS.D, are you not taking calcium supplement? If not, do you get your calcium fromthe food?

I had the same concern because I am taking Synthroid (and I dont have my thyroid gland). But I was pleasantly surprised my TSH became normal after I took R-Lipoic. It has been low for 5 months.

The only thing that concerns me somewhat is that it says it can interfere with synthroid, which I take.

I'm not diabetic nor pre-diabetic, and I've never had chemo, and RLA has worked extremely well for me. I tried doubling the dosage to 200 mg/day, both all at once and spaced 12 hrs apart, but saw no additional benefit. Some people do.

How long did it take for you to see some improvement after taking it?

No I don't take calcium.... occasionally I use Maalox which is calcium but not every day.(for my GI problem)

I eat alot of cheese, yogurt, kefir and Lactaid milk.

Because I am taking 10,000 IU Vit D3 every other day, I don't take additional calcium. Vit D improves absorption quite a bit.

That warning comes from one study done on animals using
ALA racemic mixture. It has never been replicated in humans.
But because it is on PubMed, it is picked up by websites that post alternative information and treatments, as a disclaimer.

At this time there is no proof that it is an issue for humans. And it has been used for more than a decade.

As long as you continue to have your thyroid checkups, I don't think this warning is very large esp for R-lipoic, since this has not be tested at all. It could be that the inactive portion of ALA is the culprit and it could be that this only happens in animals.

Not all animal studies convert over to humans by a long shot.
It is your decision.
This is the German abstract from 1991 that is poorly worded and also says LA (aka thioctic acid) also raised glucose.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1815532

We now have research to show that lipoic acid actually lowers blood sugar.
This About.com link explains it in better terms:
http://altmedicine.about.com/od/alph...lipoicacid.htm

I take 75mcg levothyroxine and I don't see any changes for me.

Does the calcium in cheese, yogurt, etc. Affect the absorption of other medicines just like calcium supplements do? Do I also need to space out taking my other medicines before eating such?
Thank you.
