I have Neuropathy and suffer from burning foot pain, plus leg pain. Have it pretty well controlled most of the time. However, my husband is in a care home and has a pain in the side of his right foot..nowhere else. They have diagnosed it as Neuropathy and put him on Gabapentin and he still has the pain. He is a diabetic and in April he had OsteoMylitis surgery and had several bones removed from his foot, and had 23days of a daily IV of Daptomycin. Was told if it occured again he might lose toes or his foot. I am concerned that this is more of the same and not neuropathy. Has anybody ever heard of a small area on only one foot being called Neuropathy? The facility where he is living ignores my complaints that I do not believe he is correctly diagnosed. He was living at home when he had the earlier surgical episode.

Welcome to NeuroTalk:
The word "neuropathy" means, disease of nerves. There are hundreds of types of neuropathies. Anything that damages a nerve or nerves qualifies. So yes, your impression about the infection and surgery is accurate. It could have irritated or damaged nerves on that side. You might want to try, Biofreeze gel topically for the pain. Giving elderly patients oral drugs at their age, often results in considerable side effects. Biofreeze works well, esp for burning type sensations. It also works on painful joints and muscles. It used to be a "professional" secret shared only with physical therapists and chiropractors, but now it has generalized to the regular population. And at an affordable price. I learned of it years ago in PT when I had a tendon injury in my hip. The therapist used it 1/2 and 1/2 with the ultrasound gel, to reduce pain from the ultrasound treatments. http://www.amazon.com/BIOFREEZE-Pain...ords=biofreeze This link has free shipping too. Average prices for it used to be in the $15 range. also at iherb.com for a higher price: http://www.iherb.com/BioFreeze-Cold-...z-118-ml/43594

I have two tubes of Bifreeze here. I will suggest it to them however they do not like outside interference at this facility. Will still try as it won't hurt him and might help, as I find it helpful at times. This pain is located near a callous on the side of his foot as it was the time before his surgery. The Gabapentin has had no effect on the pain nor has the orthotic they placed in his shoe to possibly improve his gait. Suppose it is time for me to take him to the Vascular surgeon who did his surgery for an evaluation. In the meantime I'll give him the Biofreeze and tell him to use it without their knowledge.

I wouldn't expect it to penetrate a callous. And most of the nerves in the foot come down over the instep, so try the gel
on the instep on that side also. I've never used it on the bottoms of my feet. Only the top (instep) and I get complete relief from burning even though I feel it in my toes and bottoms of the feet. I think the antioxidant, in it, called Ilex also does something to help. (even though it is listed in the inert ingredients). Ilex is Yerba Mate ...the same plant. Yerba Mate is a tea very popular in S. America and is far more potent an antioxidant than green tea.
