Default What are some of the most common over the counter drugs that may help people with pn?

I've been all over reading, but can't recall where. I thought I'd put this question up for new people like myself - to have it all in one place. Thank you, sincerely KarenEvP (I know I'm not the only new person here, some people just don't post)

(Or if someone knows of a link to where it is already in one place, that would be greatly appreciated)

There are two basic OTC approaches to PN pain.

One involves supplements, and one involves OTC drugs/patches.

If you suspect certain types of deficiencies, then nutrients may help.

If you have an inflammatory component, then Salonpas patches may help. For burning-- a product high in menthol/camphor like Biofreeze helps some. We have posters who also use IcyHot.
Also AlkaSeltzer original formula works for some of us. And there are posts here about aspirin as well. It is best to discuss aspirin with your doctor, since everyday use may lead to bleeding anywhere including the stomach. The AlkaSeltzer is less dangerous because it is in solution and very quickly absorbed, but systemic aspirin will affect platelets in the blood.
Some people with autoimmune diseases have low platelets.

Capsaicin (capsicum)cream is also in many PN remedies, but many of us cannot tolerate that burning. But some find it useful.

I am finding that the magnesium lotion really helps my feet. Even reduces swelling.

More detail about supplements here:

AlkaSeltzer... the plop plop, fizz fizz?

Would one take this as if for a cold or is this used to rub on the feet? Thank you, Karen

Yes, the plop plop ... but NOT the cold remedy version. The cold remedy has other drugs in it.

The Original formula AlkaSeltzer with only aspirin, works
somehow to block burning pain in the skin. I use Equate from WalMart, as it only costs about $1.90 a box.

I use it for severe days...only, not every day. Some of us find
it very helpful. Also some posters report plain aspirin in high
dose works too. But one has to be careful with aspirin, because it can cause bleeding. The AlkaSeltzer is aspirin dissolved in water and will not upset the stomach like regular aspirin can. It is very very fast acting too. It can be wonderful at times in fact!

I have not had much burning yet, but will keep this in mind, thank you!
