My neurologist diagnosed me years ago with idiopathic peripheral neuropathy and allodynia. At first my nerve conduction studies/EMG were normal and the small nerve fiber biopsy showed nothing. A few years later my nerve conduction studies started showing up as abnormal with nerve damage and looked progressively worse every time the testing was done plus I developed muscle wasting in the back of one calf. I just went to my neuro and he has a new doctor in his practice who does those studies plus the EMG. When he finished the tests, he said well I don't see any signs of nerve damage and all the testing was normal. Is it possible to have quite a few years of positive test results and muscle wasting but then go back to normal results on the tests? I see my neuro in another week for him to review those results, blood tests and an MRI but I'm wondering if this new doctor in his practice is any good.

Thank you. I'm hoping that this is some good news about my neuropathy for a change. Last year when I had the same tests done by my neuro he said my readings had gotten much worse. He was thinking about diagnosing me with MNN but then changed his mind and told me to come back in a year.

I too had a nerve and muscle biopsy. My muscles in my calves had wasted.
But at the end of my weeks stay in the hospital, they sent me to The Santa Clara Medical Center for rehab. They gave me 1 hour of physical therapy and 1 hour of Occupational Therapy and 1 hour where I worked out of a bike machine, weights and the parallel bars. In 12 days when I got discharged, I had regained a lot of the muscle in my calves and legs. I progressed from not being able to walk, to wheel chair, to walker, to arms crutches and not can get about with a cane. Good PT & OT & Gym work-outs are everything. I would definitely question those latest results. The chances of showing no nerve damage at all now after years of increasing damage and muscle wasting is slim to none.

I am definitely going to question these results and maybe ask my neuro to redo them himself. I know when the pn first started my neuro said it was possible for it to just go away but it seems very unlikely that after developing muscle wasting in my calf due to the nerve damage that going back to normal is possible.

I personally would insist on a retest from someone other than the new doctor that just did it.
