I just read online that SAMe (S-adenosyl methionine) has been being prescribed in Europe for the past 25 years for a variety of things, including peripheral neuropathy. I had never hear of it before, nor did I turn up any results in the NeuroTalk search engine. Has anyone here heard of it?

I know you have to be careful of interactions and Mrs. D knows more.

SAMe has been very valuable for me. But I don't see much
improvement with PN. Here is a long thread (from the past) about it: http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread5846.html I stopped it for about 2 yrs recently and my knees flared back up. So it was working for me, but very slowly for over a decade. I am back on 400mg a day in the morning on an empty stomach, therefore. It does improve mood, and so I think that alone helps with pain. Since people may have mixed arthritis, or psoriatic arthritis, and the compressions from that inflammation may affect nerves, I think it is worth a try. I get my SAMe at Costco. I use Naturemade and they did discontinue the coupon offers, but still Costco has coupons now and then for it in their flyers for members. It is much less expensive today, and compared to the past when they were over $1.00 a tablet (for the 200mg), so that is an incentive to try. I never had any side effects, except for some energizing side effects in the beginning. People with bipolar are still warned about SAMe, but I haven't seen much in the way of complaints over the years. It is best to take a B-complex, like B-Right with it. After SAMe releases its methyl group it recycles back to homocysteine, so the B-complex helps to keep that down.

Thanks for the data! I've heard a lot of good things though I'm a little leery of the energizing component as I'm struggling with insomnia. I think I'll try 200 mg before breakfast and see what that does.

Hmmm. I took it for a while, years, then stopped. I started again about a year or so ago. I don't remember why.
![]() If I look it up, I'll remember tho. Ah, the US National Library of Medicine says this about SAM-e. Likely effective for... Depression. Taking SAMe by mouth or by injection seems to reduce symptoms of depression. Several studies have shown that SAMe can be beneficial and might be as effective as some prescription medications used for depression (tricyclic antidepressants). Some research also shows that taking SAMe might be helpful for people who do not have a good response to a prescription antidepressant. However, SAMe should not be taken in combination with a prescription antidepressant without the monitoring of a health professional. Osteoarthritis. Taking SAMe by mouth seems to work about as well as aspirin and similar medications, but it can take twice as long to start working. Most people with arthritis need to take SAMe for about a month before they feel better. https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/...tural/786.html |
