I've been curious as to why some people get their neuropathy so much worse on one side. Is their any significance to this? Thanks...
|

For a CMTer one side can be worse than the other. It's just what muscles, nerves, etc. are affected more. At least for a CMTer.

I am the same - with my feet and legs, both are affected but my left has always been more advanced that the right.
Actually it is the same with my joint pain (from my lupus), my left is always worse than my right. I think this sort of slightly asymmetrical symmetrical process is quite common with many conditions. Some of my nerve damage is totally asymmetrical eg a nerve in my left hip is affected while my right hip is not involved at all, such is the joys of mononeuritis multiplex. cheers raglet |

PN can be sensory, axonal, etc - and either a polyneuropathy (2 sides, or 2 areas equally affected) or a mononeuropathy (only one area, or one side). Levels of symptoms or pain do not have to be equal. Usually one side is worse than the other just as some people are right or left handed or right brain/left brain. Glenntaj probably will have a more detailed explanation.

--in which many nerves are affected globally, the symptoms, and damage, may not be entirely symmetrical; some areas may be affected more than others.
Over time, though, in chronic, or slowly progressing, neuropathies, there tends to be more symmetry of symptoms, though it may never be entirely even. |

Hi I was told when I was first dx by my neuro that usually it is worse on one side but well for me since it is the legs that both are effected. At first I had it in one limb though it showed in the tests in both but within a few months both my legs hurt though the original is still much worse. I am not sure if some is because I rely on the better leg too. I am hoping with better pain control I can be more even so to speak
