a simple solution is to put the wedge style (old fashion rubber wedges) door stops under each door. You don't have to shove them under to the point of making them difficult to remove, just slide it under door bottom so the cat cannot get the door open. We had to do this (and I frequently use my WC and can still get em out). Normally, while on my crutches I just pop it out of the way with my foot and get what I need, then reinsert.
My cat was also a real stinker with my handles, so on 2 doors in particular we put on door stops (on the outside of door). I just flip them up to open door and pop em down when door is shut. As silly as it sounds, your cat may benefit from a fellow house-mate. They often will play, stalk and entertain each other. Sounds like your cat it really bored. If he has nothing to entertain him he will find something to do (and not to your pleasure...) Good luck!

Jane! LOL you are NOT alone!
. Say, what about wrapping tin foil on the door handles for now? or some sticky paws or double sided tape? Cats hate that stuff.

[QUOTE=FluteMaker;402069]it sounds like your cat may just be getting bored being alone. a lot of times destructive behavior can be traced back to an animal being bored. its like with kids; "there wasnt anything better to do". if you can stomach the electric bill you might try leaving the television or a radio on while youre out. something for the cat to hear people talking and make him think hes not alone in the apartment. other than that you may need to put him up in a crate or bathroom while youre out to minimize the mess[/QUOT
I always leave the tv on for him. This isn't a major problem as I don't get out much anymore.............doctors appointments and rides on my scooter on nice days when the pain levels are reasonable. I think what I need to do is give him a good, hard play session immediately before going out and make certain he has had his Rescue drops that morning. This is going to be managable. He doesn't destroy things and always uses the litter box if I am out. Never that kind of a mess. He reminds me of a toddler who knows just how far he can push things and goes no farther. If worse comes to worse, I can crate him. There's no point in putting him in the bathroom because he can pop the door open. . Since this is my first house cat, I was primarily wanting to know if his behavior was "over the top" for a cat his age. He is still young and I am certain he will mellow out more with time. He is a fun companion. |

Thanks guys. Door stops. Duh!!!!
. Of course. Sometimes I don't see the obvious. I had tried the foil and double sided sticky tape. He loves both of them. He loves it when I make him a ball of sticky tape. He will lay on his back and pass the darn thing back and forth, from paw to paw for the longest time. The door stops should do the trick. He can keep himself occupied trying to pop them up. . . Pud is strong but not that strong. Thanks again!!!!!! |

Today was a good day. I went to see the pain doc. and the pharmacy. Before leaving the house, I played with him for an hour and he was really tired. When I returned, I found him snoozing in the window and there had been no naughty activity.
I really appreciate everyone's input. Thanks!!!!! |

Hi Jane,
Cats have different personalities just like people. I have four cats and one dog and I swear they work together in their mischief when I am gone. I too have one cat that is especially gifted in door opening. He can even open the sliding glass door to my patio. He doesn' step out the door however will let all of the other pets out. He sits innocently by the door while everyone else is on the loose. I did have the male cats neutered and that has helped some as for the destructive nature when I am gone. Grammyto09 |
