Keep On Moving Club: January 2010
MS sometimes makes it hard to keep moving, exercising, stretching, so we do less and less. Before long, its not just MS that interferes with our mobility and health, its also atrophy of muscle causing more balance problems and more muscle weakness.
So, we started a Club to support and encourage us to keep moving --You use it or you lose it! So, what do you do-- do you stretch, do you walk, swim, aquacise, isometrics, lift free weights, Wii,calisthenics? Please join the club. ! I swim a mile a day. In 2004, I was so weak, I could not walk across a room. Now I swim a mile every single day and I do free weights twice weekly to help with osteoporosis prevention. Cherie (clinical1) was able to stop using her w/c after she religiously worked on a pool based stretch/exercise routine daily. What do you do |
Happy New Year, BBS!!
I did it .. and I stuck to it ... a new weight-loss/workout program ... started yesterday! I'm on a 4-day "sassy water" drink ... fast ... monday starts with a new eating healthy program! yesterday - I worked my 4 - 10 reps of arm weights and 15 push-ups against the cupboard ... will post later of what I will do today ... goal: walking up/down the stairwell - 10 times (should be 200 steps) ... the arms, and push-ups!! *** update: I got the arm reps DONE .. and 20 push-ups DONE ... will work on the stairs this afternoon!! :D |
So far30 min walk at the gym + weights for upper body...good way to begin the new year!
|
My 84 year old Mother and I go to Silver Sneakers fitness class twice a week which is great. Some insurance plans will pay for the classes which ours doesn't but we still go.
I have Wii games and Wii fit and have been doing those every day for a half hour or until I get tired. The only thing I don't like is I am not able to do some yoga poses and it "scolds" me for not standing still! :o I have tremors and I can't stand still but other than that I do pretty well.:) |
well I did yoga early this morning!! Plan to do yoga most days if I get time... cause it feels so good on my body! hugss all, sarah happy 2010
|
I got up on my own two feet today. :)
|
I actually went to the gym today with my dad and treadmilled for a half hour.
It was warm in the gym, but getting warm from exercising was totally fixed (or ruined?) by going back outside. We've got dangerous windchills right now. During the day it was freaking cold, now tonight, it's really really freaking cold. I had a bad headache before I went (and no, I wasnt drinking last night) but something about the walk seemed to help that. |
I got an exercise DVD from Betaferon and thought I'd try some of it out yesterday.
Now bearing in mind I used to do triathlons, swim for hours on end, rock climbing, parachuting, hill walking, horse riding, yaddie yaddie ya, I was most upset to realise that I was actually having trouble with the first section - On the spot marching with syncronised shadow boxing. Damn nearly killed me!!! I can't do arms and legs together!!! and I got really really tired. I'm very upset at this. It was like I could see all the small subtle changes that have accumulated and left me with this pathetic feeble shell of the person I used to be. I think new year fireworks wore me out too and have been on the sofa for practically 36 hours. Oh well, I can find comfort in a bowl of triple choc ice cream.............. :( |
my exercise for the month of January is.....shoveling! oh, and snow blowing, oh and sweeping the snow off the steps! oh, and dusting the snow off the cars! oh, and clearing the snow off the deck so that the birds can get to the feeders.
I really hate January in this neck of the woods. its alot like work! :( |
Well, we are off to a great new year : Look at all of this activity!!! I swam a mile today: cold pool, 78, colder air: 51 with wind. Wetsuit surely helped me!
Hi Dejibo: shoveling is amazing work, it always made me sweat inside my snow suit :) puds, those exercise tapes are very different than "real life" exercise arent they? Erin: Nice job. Exercise is anti inflammatory, maybe that was helpful to the headache? Sallyc: I like seeing you get up onto your two feet :) sabimax: Yoga is awesome, I never could do it , and I tried several times! azjanie: I love the name Silver Sneakers :) Good for you for working out like that. debbieD: Great job! Vonn: That is a fantastic new workout program. Keep us posted on your new program. Happy new Year to all--keep on moving~! |
I haven't conquered the stairs yet .. but I did do some grocery shopping and purchased a food processor (that was some wallet exercising!)
but, I did do my push-ups and arm exercises ... and the weight is coming off ... and I'm eating better! |
One hour of walking and fence fixing.
Half an hour of swimming and floating. Two hours napping on the sofa. One hour of getting jiggy. One almighty bout of betaflu. |
getty jiggy sounds interesting hehehee
Well, took a walk with the dog yesterday, and today might burrr out there again or at least yoga... I too, Vonn should start some arm weights or push ups... strengthen myself up more... I feel things are weaker!! good work all keep moving, sarah |
ok, you can tell I have not been around a teenager in years...what the heck does "jiggy" mean? I hope it's not contagious and doesnt require antibiotics.
|
aka Booty call... :o
no antibiotics required |
Booty call? Hm, that s ounds fun. Of all the things I miss..... ;)
Swam a mile in a very cold pool and very cold air today. |
did 20-counter push-ups yesterday ...
and finished a baby afghan (had 2 large skeins that needed a workout!) - at least my wrists & fingers got a good workout ... |
Went to the gym and walked for 35 min., then did upper body weight lifting for about 10.
Then went home and did 20 min of Wii step games. My legs are screaming...stupid spasms. I can't wait until I get my surgeion's clearance to do elliptical machines and swim. This walking is so tough with the leg spasms. It's hard to walk straight because the quads are tight. Then the shin spasms start. Holy heck, all I want to do is lose weight...which is coming off slowly. Sure goes on quickly, tho:( |
Good job Vonn. And good job to Debbie also--you guys rock :)
It was too cold to swim: 40 degrees outside and 75 degree pool, so I walked. Hope to swim tomorrow. |
Now that I am on a Medicare Advantage plan, I get a free YMCA membership.
|
I did it .. I walked up and down the stairs last night (5 up/5 down .. and did that 10 times) .. whew!
then, while my laundry was drying .. I peddled a stationary bike for about 5 minutes while chit-chatting with a friend ... this morning - did my 4 sets of arm exercises with a 3# weight .. and 20 push-ups against the cupboard ... and I've been eating better and sleeping longer ... and drinking LEMON water!! |
Doydie, we will see you at the Y :)
Oh Vonn--that is so fantastic. you must feel better and be proud of yourself!!! I swam my mile today: 50 outside, 82 in the pool. Probably too cold tomorrow for a swim: maybe walk instead. |
thanks ... yesterday - got in the arms and push-ups .. today (wednesday) is my day of rest ... just going to do some quilting and cleaning ...
|
Did my 30 min walk at the gym, plus 15 min of upper body weight work. Now on to the rest of my day...
|
I'm snowed in (again!) and watching the contractor finish building my desk today. Too tired to exercise (insomnia from the excitement of remodeling) I keep falling asleep everytime I sit down.
The snow is a real downer to making me want to do any exercise. If the streets dont majorly suck, I might be able to put my truck in 4wheel drive and go walk on a treadmill. I might just get my real exercise later today by cleaning up the sawdust from my new desk and filling up all the snazzy white cabinetry with my junk, and arranging books in the bookcase. I cant wait till tuesday, that's when my tv gets mounted on the wall, and I can quit moving my tv back and forth across the room for exercise. I think I have enough space in my room now that I could maybe get a Wii fit thingie for exercising. |
Nice going Vonn.
Nice goint to Deb too. Erin, I have heard that Wii is great fun for moving around! There was ice on the windshield in Florida today: Way to cold to swim. So I walked 45 mins and lifted weights 30 mins. |
woohoo for BBS without swim and doing other things yeahhhh
did a walk and yoga Sunday, yesterday not much other than working... today worked but going to do yoga.. maybe some stairs.. good idea Vonn... since I have not been as active outside work even stairs could be great for me... back is hurting daily most days... and just having troubles.. but yoga is key! |
Hi Everybody!
I had an exercise incident today. ;) I decided to take the stairs at work from the 3rd floor up to the 9th. I got up there and found the door locked so I had to go down all nine flights to the first floor (the only door where exits are allowed.) I have to figure a way to do it with my break and lunch time so I can get a stair workout in during the day. ;) I'll report back tomorrow and let you all know how it works. :D (I better pack my sneakers and use them on my lunch break.) |

15 minutes in the pool which felt like it was full of treacle.
I'm struggling to walk to the hosses. It's all fend for yourselves here again. :( |
Did about 40 min on the Wii, since I don't think it's a good idea for me to drive in that snow today...still built up a sweat.
Good job on finding the stairs, Wiz...just don't overdo it...esp with the training going on...you don't want to tax the body/mind too much...it might bite you back:o |
Wiz lol, that reminds me of when I was in florida for work, the other lady I travelled with was a smoker. We got to the room of ours, it was like on the 9th floor. Realizing it was a non smoking hotel.... our room was not only on 9th but way long hallway length from the entrance and elevator to the entrance. So after hanging a bit she asked if I wanted to go with her outside for the smoke she wanted....
we realized we were real close to the stairs, so thought lets take those down instead of walking the hallway so far down... once down we figured we would sit by pool for while and use elevator main area to come back up!! so here we go, down down down the 9 floors... as we get down to final floor... the door has a BIG red sign on it stating emergency exit only do not open!! but then we realize also, no door to hallway to that first floor... so we hiked up the nine floors back to our room.... no cig for her.. and big workout for us both... that was the wierdest thing though.. as no entrances to any of the floors between 1 and 9..... is that wierd huh!! ok... so back to the main subject now that I typed a very long story... the yoga for yesterday did not work, I was feeling a big dizzy last night, but still thought yoga would feel good and maybe help...nope I could not do much... got a start but the dizzies were not good last night!! today, I think I will get outside for a walk... numb face, cogfog galore, a bit dizzy not bad though... so heading out. Just got back from travelling hour away for one of the kids special dentists... hugsss, sarah |
That is a weird story sabi: You are a better person than I. I wouldve opened that emergency door for sure :)
Wow, looka t all of our active members--moving even though its tough. You put the average american to shame :) I swam a mile in the warm pool tday :) COld out, but water was warm ... I so missed it yesterday. |
That fire escape story reminds me of a totally non exercise related tale.
A well renowned surgeon on a unit where I worked once was answering a resus call and took the fire escape as a short cut, passing a gowned gentleman coming down the stairs. Thinking it odd for a patient to be taking those stairs he continued on to the resuscitation patient only to find it was the exact same man as he'd just passed on the stairs. |
That is a strange story!
I swam a mile today. The pool will be closed sat and sun because we are expecting frigid weather in this part of Florida. Too bad.... |
37 out: Too cold to swim. Warm pool is closed, the cold pool is 73 degrees. So I walked, jogged 4 miles indoors in an hour. I made a loop around the living room and jogged and walked it while watching TV.
|
Night before last I did about 20 minutes in the workout room at the hotel. I used the recumbant bike, the stairmaster and the treadmill (ran on that while I held on.) That one was my favorite because I could increase the incline and make it harder.
The next three weeks I'm taking my swimsuit because they have a small pool to swim in. :) I only saw others using it once so hopefully that will be the case when I go back. I'll be there three days next week and four days each of the last two weeks of my job training. Today I'm getting the accounting finished for the office and the old company but I hope to do Pilates tomorrow, especially the one for the abs. |
yesterday I had a vertigo spell, so came home from work ASAP well hubby had to pick me up as I could not drive in the vision, dizzy, lost want to close eyes state I was in. Slept 7 hours, then felt somewhat better.... worked today 10 hours... to catch up on some things from yesterday, came home and fell asleep for few hours... stuffy nose, and tired.
hate vertigo, and tired of having those spells... hugssss, sarah hence no exercise today or yesterday. |
Vertigo is the pits sabi. I hope you get relief.
ewiz: You can buy something called "Swim cords". They are like bungee cords. You attach one to the ladder, and other to your ankle. You swim in place. Its great for small pools. I use them when I travel for small hotel pools. Our pool was closed today :freezing outside. So, I walked indoors: four miles, one hour. |
Did my usual 30 min. walk around the track...since I'm not allowed to swim, I ache for it...:(
