Default I feel for ya

I know that pain you speak of and it's horrible!! When I am in desperate need of relief, I do the warm, epsom salt baths and they help me a lot. And I also keep an eye out for anyone with a chainsaw so I can cut my legs off when they get to feeling like that. Grrrrrr.........

This is a tough one. There is some research that suggests that bisphosphonates help with the deep bone pain for people with RSD so it could be something you could check into.

After my severe allergic reaction to pamidronate infusions I'm ruled out as a candidate for this class of drugs. Although my reaction is considered rare it was no fun and this class of drugs does have many risks.

I haven't found anything else to lower the bone pain but as others here suggest, heat is a life saver. I prefer to use my hot wax machine for my foot and hand.

Good luck.

I have bone pain as well,I had a total hip replacement done and i have severe pain in the joint . Im taking anti-inflammatorys ,sometimes they seem to help and other times,i was taking celebrex 200mg and had no relief,,As edever and vanna posted,,heat helps,I use both, dry[heating pad and wet heat [bathtub],,wet heat is always better,,Ive noticed that anti depressants such as xanx seems to knock my bone pain down from an 8 to a 6 and its consistant,,I really hope and pray that God comes soon,,

Hi Deb,

Here's a good description of the pathophysiology of bone pain from Wikipedia.

Quote:
The stimulation of the nociceptors that innervate bone tissue leads to the sensation of bone pain. Bone pain originates from both the periosteum and the bone marrow which relay nociceptive signals to the brain creating the sensation of pain. Bone tissue is innervated by both myelinated and unmyelinated sensory neurons (A-β, A-δ and C fibers). In combination, they can provide an initial burst of pain (myelinated neurons) followed by a slower and longer lasting dull pain (unmyelinated neurons).[5] [3]

Nociceptors responsible for bone pain can be activated via several mechanisms including deterioration of surrounding tissue, bone destruction[1], and physical stress which shears the bone, vascular, muscle, and nervous tissue.
There could be many reasons for bone pain, don't just chalk it up to RSD. As I understand it, it really depends on the what the cause of the bone pain is as to whether or not it would show on an MRI, neuropathic pain doesn't show up on an MRI. I've always had deep bone pain right from the beginning, more so than the burning. My recent MRI didn't show much so I was sent for a CT scan and just waiting on those results. Since you say that this is a new symptom for you you should probably consider having your doctor check you out.

Warm wishes

MsL

Hey deb
Yes ,RSd does deterorate bone density,,thats one reason why they encourage us to move,,the nerve damage that RSD causes, trys to shut down that limb for deteroration, but by forceing movement,we prolong the bone loss,,but to directly answer you question,,,The dr;s recommend a BONE SCAN....I had one and it show how much bone loss thru out my feet and hip and shoulders and pelvic , that im loseing,,It also shows hots spots,,meaning infected areas, that you may not even feel pain in yet,,It is a good dignostic test to help prove you have RSD to who ever doesnt believe you,,,,As for the meds,,The morphine sulfate release 15 mg ,,didnt help me,but I thought that {cake] on this forum was getting relief from it,,oxycotin and methadone are said to help..I dont have those,,but I as well as {fmichael} get relief from anti depressant for break thru pain,,,,xanx will bring my pain from an 8 to 6 everytime, { .05 mg],

During my (early) days of rsd, before I got some real meds, I explained rsd pain like this, quickly;
Your bone marrow feels as though it's on fire,
your skin feels as though it's in a blast freezer.

I take methadone, (Have for almost 20 years), and it controls that deep bone burning pain very well.

I'm not a doctor, you need your doctor to verify what is causing the pain, and as is usual with rsd, rule other things out.
Then, carry on with medication.

Wish you the best!
PM me if you wish..

Debbie
I had severe bone pain when I first got RSD... it continued for a few years, then gradually went away.

My Rheumatologist prescribed Miacalcin Nasal Spray (Calcitonin) .... hope I spelled those right... anyway, it took a few weeks to get the full effect, but it made a huge difference in my "deep bone pain".
