Default Dealing with spasms

I'm trying to put a picture of my right hand on here so you can see it, I hope I can do it. My fingers are very thin and they spasm up. The little one is the worst. I was just seeing it on the left hand but now I am seeing it in the right one. I massage them and get them straightened out when they do this. Yesterday was the first time my right one did this.

Is this part of RSD?

Ada

The pictures were in video form so I could't download them.

Hi Ada,
I hate to say yes it is part of RSD but I have problems with my hands curling up and my wrists wanting to curl in too so it very well be part of it or it could be something else. You should mention it to your doc to see what he thinks as he knows your history. I think you are doing the best thing by straightening them out. We have to keep our bodies moving or else atrophy sets in and it gets worse. Best of luck,
kathy d

Hi Ada, Sorry to hear of your additional problems. I had the same issues as my RSD spread to other hand, legs, and both feet etc. I found water therapy the most helpful. massage therapy was excellent to keep from freezing up. along with physical therapy. A nerf ball or soft squeezie ball is helpful for keeping motion. Something that felt good to my hands and feet are those waxing machines with the warm wax and then put plastic over hands and soft mitten. My Dr. ordered a Tens Unit for my hands. I feel it helped.
My spasms went body wide and became quite violent, like electric shocks that would raise my head off the pillow. Neuotin 3200 mg a day helped and actually stopped them, but hated it, gained weight. I was on a long time, but gradually went off and rarely get the spasms.
Hope this helps a little. Wishing you the best, your friend, loretta

Default Hi,

I put on my hand brace. I went out to the vets home to do exercises with them and my right arm was giving me fits so I decided to wear my brace to see if that helped.

I didn't think of the tens unit for my hand but right now it's on my left hip. I have a wax machine too. Under my bathroom sink. I just looked at it a few days ago. I thought I had gotten rid of it. That's a good ideal to use it.

Kathy, I see my Dr. tomorrow and I will mention it to him. I just went yesterday to have bloodwork done and an xray on my lungs to see what is causing my breathing problems.

It's hot here today and there is a warm breeze. The warm breeze seems to make my RSD worse in the right arm.

We don't have anything near by but a cold pool. I don't know if I can handle that one.

My right toes do the spasm thing too every once in a while. My right hand is the worst. It stopped for a few years after the TOS surgery but then started again. I thought I had found a cure with the surgery. Was I wrong?

Ada

I was wondering if it was the ulnar nerve causing the little finger to curl up?
Maybe if you stretch & massage the whole arm it might help?

If cause TOS or such it might help resolve it, but if RSD based maybe not as much??

You might remember some of the old posts on the old TOS forum mentioning "claw" hands...?
But I remember reading posts of spasmed muscles & limbs here too.
Like Ali & frogga - haven't heard from her in a long time..

Jo -Indeed we miss hearing from Frogga, too many others as well.

Ada - I saw my neurologist last week to complain about spasms, then he pointed out how tight my body was in general and asked how long it had been since I got any regular stretchind PT, massage therapy, etc. Turned out it's way overdue. Something to consider in any event.

Default Yep, you just caught the train

Spasms and RSD nearly always go hand in hand (ouch that pun even hurt me), but there are many options awaiting you down at the drugstore. Now the trick is in figuring out which one or combo will ease or eliminate this problem. The reason I mention ease is because spasms can get rather intensive. Like to the point where they've literally blown be out of chairs, and there wasn't a thing I could about it other than be embarrassed to living death after bouncing twice upon floor impact.

As soon as you explain this latest symptom to the doc he'll write out a script which may or may not work, but don't panic. It took us months and months before we came up with the right cocktail of multiple medications at the right dosage so they finally eased (but have never stopped) up enough so now they're just bloody annoying but not near as painful. The next time someone calls you a spaz, they mean it, but so are we so it's always nice to meet someone new to our weird body acting group. Bob.

Default Thank you all,

I went to see my Dr. yesterday and he thinks it's the carpal, TOS, and very well could be the RSD. He has PN so he deals with it in his feet. My right toes do it too and he has the same problem with his toes and feet. My RSD was really in a flare Tuesday when I posted, I was hurting in my right arm, hand left hand and the right foot up to the knee.

Jo, I had ulner nerve surgery on the right elbow about 5 years ago but it is possible scar tissue is causing it again. This seemed like it was up at the shoulder area though causing the pain along with the RSD pain. I'm wondering if it's the TOS. You just might be right on that. Reggie couldn't get a pulse in either of my arms yesterday either. She can't never get it in the left arm but neither yesterday.

Mike, you are right about the stretching. I have been going out to the vets home and exercise with them. They use the therabands and I have to stand and watch them do that one but we do stretches and what exercises they can do.

Ada

Default Hi Ada

Hi there,
I had spasms in my entire left arm and shoulder. I found a doctor by the name of Emran Sheikh of the Rothman Institute in NJ/Philly. He did a Open Carpal Tunnel Release and a Ulnar Nerve Transposition. This surgery has helped my spasms a lot. He's a wonderful neuro doc and has wonder bedside manner. If you have any questions msg me or email me.
