I caught an episode of House last night..Long show short..House was given Ketamine for his chronic leg pain..It was administered without his knowledge during surgery due a gun shot wound....This particular episode revolved around his delusional state due to the Ketamine... although it he did have success in lower his pain.. They even referred to the procedure being done in Germany for chronic pain patients... I enjoy the show House anyway mostly because I did that "kinda" work for my living..That medical stuff always interest me...Anyone else see this particular episode??

Ya i've seen this episode a few times, LOVE IT!

I saw that episode awhile back. He's still popping all of those pills on his new episodes.
I watched one yesterday which was a rerun where he goes into a shop and buys a cane and picks out one with fire emblems running up the bottom. I am thinking they are referring to the RSD but I haven't heard the term used.

I don't like him though. The show is just so unrealistic. No Dr. could get by with what he does on that show in real life.

Hi Kathy, Yep, I've seen that one too. I enjoy that show too and almost find myself looking something up as I am interested in medical things also. I was in nursing college until they told me that they wouldn't allow me to do my clinicals due to the RSD. I had been very open about my condition, but oh well. I would like them to actually say what his condition is supposed to be if only to get recognition for RSD out there. Anyone out there with Holywood contacts?? Luv, Lisa

When my daughter got me to watch the show.. I became so interested in what was going on with his conditon as to rule out RSD with him..leave it to me to pay close attention... I discovered..he does not suffer with RSD he had suffered an emboli (clot in his leg) and when operating on his leg due to the big amounts of pain they removed so much muscle that he has been left disabled.. See I am medical goo-roo... 25 years as a research technologist... unfortuantely, RSD was not part of my career...

In my pre-RSD life, I was a nurse.

I usually love medical shows. I have tried to watch House, but get too ****** off and put it back on boycott. Their little 'team' of expert mds who do all bloodwork, woundcare, med administration, IV starting, vital signs taking, etc just ****** me off it's so unrealistic.

I twisted my ankle the other day. I can assure you, my doctor did not come down to radiology and take my xray himself.

Iam sorry as I understand the subject matter and Greg House are not as realistic and as professional as we wish it/he could be..It was the story line of the one episode dealing with Ketamine that I was really pointing out... Funny, I giggle thru it most of the time, as Dr. House has the same discruntle demeanor as one of our neighbors... now thats a grrrr...

Kathy, House is my favorite show!! I started watching it about a year ago and loved it so i started renting the shows from the beginning. I use it as a distraction when i get on the treadmill (i try to get thru a show while on the treadmill). It also reminds me of work which i miss terribly. That particular show was enlightening. When i was debating ketamine my husband was against it because of my age and risks of coma-he also was concerned that it would work and give me false hope and when the ketamine wears off he felt i would become more depressed. I didnt really understand what he meant until i saw that series of House. It was cruel to see House pain free and than watch the pain return. Thats when my husband and i decided to learn and adapt to RSD. I am on meds and who knows how i will be in time. My hope is they figure out what to mix with ketamine to get it to last. momof4

I am a bit of a House addict - I find it hard to watch television but I've really got into House. In one episode they think that someone has CRPS because he has such bad pain in his arms and they put an SCS in which doesn't work because it's something else. The ketamine issue was very interesting as it did work for a while - in the episodes following he is walking without the cane, skateboarding, running to work and building up the strength in his leg. A couple of months later the pain starts coming back (it is hinted that it's due to re-injury and over use from the running/ skate boarding/ general messing about).

Part of what I love about House is that a lot of the medical stuff is bull****, when do you see a doctor taking an x-ray? or a team for that matter! The only time I've had an x-ray by a doctor was when I dislocated my shoulder and the end of my humerus had moved onto my chest and the radiologists couldn't get a decent picture of it because we couldn't move my arm and as I have almost no movement anyway I couldn't move in the positions they wanted me. It is ridiculous when doctors are hanging IV's etc (although the patient almost always gets worse with the doctor in the room, I suppose it would spoil it otherwise).

It is also an interesting commentary on chronic pain. He regularly says that he has to work, but that to do that he has to take the tablets. The reaction of everyone around him to him taking vicodin and complaining that his pain is not being adequately controlled are met with derision and the assumption that he is an addict. In one episode he get placed on Methadone, and whilst it leaves him almost pain free, walking better and able to work everyone has a go at him, calls him a drug addict and he is nearly fired.

In my personal opinion I really enjoy the show although I realise that much of the show is perfectly ridiculous (it's even funnier if you live outside the US, my mum was amazed by some of the ways they treat patients as we are used to a socialised medical system where even an urgent MRI can take weeks).

At the moment I haven't found anything better to watch than House - but that just shows how rubbish the rest of the TV programs are - how can we have 300 channels and NOTHING on.

Never watched it, but now I'm curious. Don't have anything better to to during the day! Frogga, you are so right about nothing being on TV. My husband and I were just talking about that. I mean, c'mon, the first Saturday of the month at 9:00p.m. and we get "Star Wars"! I think we should pay per show, not per month!
