He knows to elevate as much as possible to keep swelling down and has a note to do so in class. I guess one good thing coming out of being an "expert" on foot injuries is he's doing everything I tell him with no questions asked.
Sending good vibes and will keep you and your son in my thoughts and prayers, may he heal quickly.

I remember when our grandson jumped off the roof of their garage, a few years ago, into a snow drift and had a bad spiral break in his leg. It was sure hard to send him to school. ( We mama and grandma bears want to keep our cubs safe).

The school provided him with a wheel chair with a leg lift and had him go to his classes 5 min early so he was not in the middle of the crowd going down the halls. The school nurse was awesome, so helpful and caring, she wheeled him out to our car everyday. I hope your son has a good experience at school. All the attention our grandson was given at school, was a turning point for him, in a very positive way, a blessing in disguise. Although that day in the ER we would have never thought of it that way. Our son even made a lamp out of his cast.

peace

Zinnia,

Thanks. I love the lamp made out of a cast! That's great. My son laughed when I asked him if he was getting sympathy at school. He says his friends tease him every day. But it is all a sign of affection and he comes home smiling even after facing the day in a bootcast.

Heart

We saw ortho today and it reinforced my preference for second opinions and specialist care. If I'd gone with the first recommendation my son's foot might have been at risk.

The clinic doctor said 4 weeks in the boot and that we did NOT need to follow up with ortho or even get re-checked. I of course scheduled ortho immediately.

Ortho gave a longer time for healing and does x-rays mid-point and before releasing from the boot. The doctor emphasized that my son is not to try anything besides a shower or sleep out of the boot or he risks going to the operating room. So now that the doc said it I can nag a little less. It's so tempting to hop on one foot just to bathroom....

Thanks for the support. I will sigh a big sigh of relief when we get to a couple weeks out from this.

That's great that he recognizes your expertise, no questions asked. He sure is blessed to have you watching over him! I have to admit I shuddered when I read that he broke his foot. Gut reaction. I nearly vomited when I heard my sister broke her foot last August (she's doing great now, two surgeries and no problems, and starting to run again.) CRPS definitely changes our reaction to things like this. Will keep him in my prayers!

Thanks Swimtime. I am glad to read your sister is doing well. The surgical aspect really gets scary doesn't it? And I think we get a little PTSD around injuries with this illness, especially for our family members.

My son is doing well. The bruising worked it's way up to the surface and it is not bad at all. He isn't even needing tylenol as of a few days ago. Ah youth!

I can't wait till his recheck in 2 weeks. If there is still no displacement, he has skated by the danger zone.

Thumbs Up Kids are amazing!

Hi everyone,

My son had his 3 week follow up and x-ray today and his bone is almost completely healed! One teeny area needs to fill in. The orthopedist was very surprised and said it was because the break was near a growth plate. So no displacement, no surgery and even no more boot. We are all thrilled.

Thanks for the support. I have a happy son and one less thing to worry about. Yeah.
