Yeah I'm being careful of taking any of the anti heartburn GERD meds as they all seem to carry problems when taken long term. My reflux is back at night, but I think I've allowed myself too many greasy meals.

Don't forget that antacids can block the absorption of some medications. Also it's always a good idea to check with your doctor before adding any medications including over-the-counter medications and supplements.

If you are experiencing heartburn at night try propping yourself up with pillows can really make a difference.

Also, the weight gain many of us get from gabapentin can cause GERD. Just another wonderful thing in the wonderful world of CRPS!

My stomach distress has been significant enough lately for me to go back on the mashed red bliss potato diet. Some people write they have benefited from taking a few tablespoons of raw potato juice-I may resort to trying this next.

The neurosurgeon prescribed generic Zantac for me to take once a day.

Ugh the weight gain from the Gabapentin is depressing.
And I have resorted to sleeping propped to practically sitting up recently. But it works. Its a lot better than the reflux waking me up!
I wish I could lose this weight.

Becca,

Glad you have found some solutions to the nightime reflux, I know how awful that is. I did find that eating a little yogurt throughout the day helped, felt calming to my stomach. It is really hard to loose the weight gained from gabapentin. The weight gain is not helping my back or foot that has RSD. I have lost 10 pounds slowly and am moving a little more lately. Glad you are here with us, keep sharing it has been a little quiet in here lately.
peace

I got stomach issues after getting CRPS too. My gastro told me it was not acid, but gastroparesis, which can involve feeling very full, nausea, loss or gain of weight, and stomach pain. It happens because the muscles in the digestive track are not doing their job correctly, so it won't show up on most imaging or on any tests. Mine got so bad I couldn't eat for like 3 weeks.

What helps? For me 2 things made a HUGE difference (much better improvement than with meds or antacids): Peppermint and heat

Specially coated peppermint oil capsules relieve nausea and pain and have the bonus of sometimes making me feel like an ice dragon
Peppermint gum or mints are NEVER out of my reach anymore
Putting a heating pad on can provide relief for the more intense stomach pain

I hope this helps and that you feel better soon!

There are a lot of times when I can't finish a meal, I get full so fast (and yet I'm so overweight....). I'm gonna get out my peppermint tea. I should remember that from pregnancy!

My gastro just prescribed me peppermint oil capsules for abdominal pain and ginger capsules for nausea. He said they are essentially the only herbal supplements he recommends. However, he did point out that because peppermint oil is a muscle relaxer, it can make GERD worse. This is why he wanted me to get the capsules so the oil doesn't get on the esophagus. While he wrote a script for the capsules, he also recommended the OTC brand IBGuard. It claims to have research backing it as well as doctor support. Since you have GERD, I wanted to share that, just in case.

My gastro started me on IBGuard too but it was soooooo expensive. I found some at whole foods for cheaper that also had a special coating on it that my gastro approved of.
